Toronto - Canada says it will open an embassy in Myanmar in support of the country's moves to open up and improve human rights.
Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird said Friday that he hopes opening an embassy in Myanmar, also known as Burma, will build on other positive developments in the southeast Asian country. He did not say when the embassy would open.
Canada loosened most of its sanctions against Myanmar earlier this year. Western economic and political sanctions had been imposed on Myanmar's previous military regime for its decades of repressive and undemocratic policies.
Baird visited Myanmar earlier this year to confer honorary Canadian citizenship on former political prisoner Aung San Suu Kyi, who won a parliamentary seat in historic elections there. - Sapa-AP
