Senate leaders still have no fiscal cliff deal, time running out: senior aide

CHICAGO (Reuters) - The FBI is still searching for one of two convicted bank robbers who escaped last week from a high-rise jail in downtown Chicago by lowering themselves on a makeshift rope nearly 20 stories to the street. Kenneth Conley, 38, and his cellmate, Joseph Jose Banks, 37, escaped from the Metropolitan Correctional Center early on the morning of December 18. The pair apparently broke a window in the cell they shared, squeezed through the opening and lowered themselves to the street. They then hailed a cab to make their getaway. ...

SEO is Not a Quick-Fix Marketing Solution | SEO Miami Search ...

SEOWhile SEO, search engine optimization, is very important to websites and where they show up in search ranking for certain keyword phrases, it?s a concept that is often misunderstood by Internet marketers. They know that SEO is important but they don?t always understand why or how it works. SEO is important but it?s really only one portion of a successful online business or website.

The obsessive focus on SEO is one that is left over from an old era on the Internet- one where quality of content mattered less and funneling massive amounts of traffic to a landing page was your most powerful tool for success. That strategy is pretty much dead today as Google updates have shifted the focus to quality content and brand awareness.

But this doesn?t mean that SEO is dead- it?s still how people find you on the Web. What it means, however, is that it is not a quick-fix marketing solution and instead is just one of many tools in your toolbox for building a quality business online.

Before we look at how SEO is important, let?s look at some other important aspects of your website. Remember that SEO can drive all the traffic in the world to your website and it won?t help you one bit if that traffic is not converting.

To convert visitors to customers:

Create a solid business model- You need a strong plan of action in a proven market with a clear and profitable ROI. There is some risk involved in every business but you should be realistic with what you expect to gain from the site and the business as a whole.

Build your brand- Numerous studies have proven that consumers buy more from brands they trust. What are you doing to build brand awareness and trust with your target market? Building your brand requires consistency and honesty.

Know how to close the sale- In order to make the sale, you need to have something of value to offer, presented it an appropriate way and try not to come off as too desperate. You want your customers to buy because they need and want it, not because they feel sorry for you.

Focus on your SEO

Finally, let?s focus on your SEO. It?s meant to complement your marketing efforts, not to control them. Pictures and images you use on your site should contain SEO-friendly ALT tags and titles. You should user headers and subheaders with keywords in your content. You should have quality, natural inter-linking to and from your site. The list of SEO how-tos goes on and on but the most important thing to remember is that your SEO efforts should not be fake, bought or forced. You will hurt the three steps above when you don?t do your SEO correctly.

It?s not about how much you can fudge the numbers or ?trick? a visitor into hitting your site. Those numbers don?t mean anything when it comes to making sales and building your brand so take some time to slow down and do it correctly, efficiently and naturally.

If you need help with SEO, it is recommended you work with a professional that has a proven track record in the industry. Too often those claiming to be ?SEO experts? will come along and take some unsuspecting customer for a ride and leave them with a site that Google bans or blacklists and a lot less money in their pocket.

'Do something!' Americans fed up with D.C. over 'cliff'

Americans from across the country express their frustration with lawmakers in Washington who have yet to reach an agreement on averting looming tax increases.

By Tracy Connor, NBC News

Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker said Friday that ?the American people should be disgusted? the nation?s leaders haven?t been able to avert the fiscal cliff.

Well, mission accomplished.

John Makely / NBC News

Abigail Holt, 17, (right), of Hartford, Conn., says Washington's inability to avert the fiscal cliff is "annoying."

Across the country, people are shaking their heads about negotiations that go nowhere and fingers that point everywhere while the nation hurtles toward the precipice of a new economic crisis.

?They should make a plan, make up their minds and do something!? Abigail Holt of Hartford, Conn., told NBC News.

She?s 17 years old and admits she?s just learning about the federal government and the fiscal cliff. But she knows this much: ?It?s annoying.?

And that's being polite.

Writing in the Daily Beast, Howard Kurtz called the nation's capital "the country?s biggest day-care center." The famous sex therapist Dr. Ruth Westheimer hit below the belt, noting on Twitter that "Members of Congress who can't compromise probably aren't good lovers."

Californian Pat Marshall said the politicians "appear to be very self-centered on making sure that they?re taken care of and the American public comes second."

After an hourlong meeting Friday with congressional leaders that he described as "constructive," President Obama acknowledged that people outside Washington were bewildered by D.C. "dysfunction" and that time -- and patience -- were running out.

Lawmakers have 'lost touch'
Indeed, with higher taxes and deep spending cuts looming without a deal, Americans? faith in Washington is dissipating by the day.

A Dec. 9 Gallup poll found that 59 percent thought it was likely the White House and Congress could hammer out a deal to avoid a slide down the cliff; by this week, that had sunk to 50 percent.

Skeptics were gaining ground, meanwhile: 48 percent think an agreement before the year-end deadline is unlikely, up 10 points from two weeks earlier.

John Makely / NBC News

Rich Dodds, 49, of Houston, Texas, says the elected officials in Washington have "lost touch" with Americans who will be affected by the fiscal cliff.

?It doesn?t feel like they?re doing much,? said Rich Dodds, 49, an energy product manager from Houston, Texas. ?I think they?ve lost touch with who the American people are. It?s a pretty elite group in Washington.?

The fact that both houses of Congress went into recess -- the Senate took a nearly week-long break, and the House is still on vacation until Sunday -- bothered some.

?This is one of the most important issues and they are not even working,? said Bill Prosser, 49, a telecommunications salesman from Clifton, Va. ?I?m very disappointed in them.?

Nicole Hayward, 28, of Brooklyn, N.Y., was so angered by the congressional recess that she posted a petition on Change.org demanding lawmakers get back to business.

?I turn on the news every day while I?m getting ready for work and I saw coverage about how Congress was going to break for the holidays and we might not have a resolution,? the marketing director said. ?I thought, who cares about their holiday vacation? It really got me going.?

Hayward got only 101 signatures on her petition. She attributed the lack of interest to cynicism.

?The reason why the average American doesn?t pay attention to this issue and the details is they think Congress will come together and pass something that just kicks the can down the road and things won?t change in [their] life,? she said.

John Makely / NBC News

Bill Prosser, 49, of Clifton, Va., says members of Congress should be locked in a room until they can make a deal.

Bipartisan blame
Inside the Beltway, Democrats are condemning Republicans and vice versa for the stalemate. But the nation?s voters are more bipartisan in their blame, with neither Republicans nor Democrats obtaining majority support.

?Essentially, right now, 25 percent of the public approves of the job the GOP congressional leaders are doing and 40 percent approves of the job the Democratic leaders are doing,? said Jocelyn Kiley, a senior researcher for the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press.

Prosser thinks there?s a time-tested way to bring the two sides together before Jan. 1 -- something akin to the old papal conclaves in which cardinals were locked in a room until they chose a new pontiff.

?Just say you?re not going to leave until you have a deal,? Prosser said.? ?Get in a room -- and get it done!?

Who do you blame for the nation teetering on the edge of the fiscal cliff?

?

(AP) ? The union for longshoremen along the East Coast and Gulf of Mexico has agreed to extend its contract for 30 days, averting a possible strike that could have crippled operations at ports that handle about 40 percent of all U.S. container cargo, a federal mediator announced Friday.

The extension came after the union and an alliance of port operators and shipping lines resolved one of the stickier points in their months-long contract negotiations, involving royalty payments to the longshoremen for each container they unload.

Negotiations will continue until at least midnight Jan. 28. Some important contract issues remain to be resolved, but the head of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, George Cohen, said the agreement on royalties was "a major positive step forward."

"While some significant issues remain in contention, I am cautiously optimistic that they can be resolved in the upcoming 30-day extension period," he said.

The terms of the royalty agreement were not announced.

The master contract between the International Longshoremen's Association and the U.S. Maritime Alliance originally expired in September. The two sides agreed to extend it once before, for 90 days, but it had been set to expire again at 12:01 a.m. Sunday.

As recently as Dec. 19, the president of the longshoremen, Harold Daggett, had said a strike was expected.

A work stoppage would have idled shipments of a vast number of consumer products, from electronics to clothing, and kept U.S. manufacturers from getting parts and raw materials delivered easily.

Business groups expressed relief that the two sides had agreed to keep the ports open.

"A coast-wide port shutdown is not an option. It would have severe economic ramifications for the local, national and even global economies and wreak havoc on the supply chain," said National Retail Federation President Matthew Shay.

Major ports that would have been frozen included the massive terminals serving New York City overseen by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and critical seaports in Savannah, Ga., Houston, and Hampton Roads, Va.

New York Shipping Association President Joseph Curto said avoiding a strike is critical "to thousands of workers who depend on port activities for their livelihood."

Other ports that would have been affected by a strike are in Boston; the Philadelphia area; Baltimore; Wilmington, N.C.; Charleston, S.C.; Jacksonville, Fla.; Port Everglades, Fla.; Miami; Tampa, Fla.; Mobile, Ala.; and New Orleans.

Longshoremen on the West Coast have a separate collective bargaining agreement.

South Africa president prefers people over pets

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? South Africa's president says a dog should not be man's best friend.

President Jacob Zuma made critical remarks about pet care that touch on sensitive race relations in South Africa, which was dominated by whites until apartheid was dismantled almost two decades ago, The Star newspaper reported Thursday.

The newspaper cited Zuma as saying in a speech Wednesday that the idea of having a pet is part of "white culture" and that people should focus on family welfare.

The president's office sought to clarify his remarks, saying he was encouraging "the previously oppressed African majority" to uphold its own culture. It also suggested the way in which the comments were reported, rather than the comments themselves, was divisive.

The president's remarks triggered a flurry of retorts from animal lovers on Twitter and other social media.

"Will I become 'more African' if I kick my dog, President Zuma," one person commented tartly.

Another lamented: "He keeps on dividing this country."

And another humorist wrote: "Well, that pretty much rules out that photo opportunity with Zuma, the Obamas, & their pet dog, Bo, in the White House."

The backdrop to the dog debate is the legacy of Western colonialism in Africa, as well as the bitter struggle against apartheid in South Africa that culminated in the first democratic elections in 1994. Poverty and economic imbalances remain a source of deep strain in the nation of 50 million.

During his speech to an appreciative crowd in KwaZulu-Natal, Zuma's home province, the president said people who love dogs more than people have a "lack of humanity" and that some people are trying in vain to "emulate whiteness," The Star reported.

"Even if you apply any kind of lotion and straighten your hair, you will never be white," he reportedly said.

In a statement, the South African presidency said Zuma was trying to "decolonize the African mind post-liberation" and enable people to take pride in their heritage and not feel pressure to adopt customs of minority cultures. Animals can be cared for, was the message, but not at the expense of people.

It said he gave examples of people loving animals more than other human beings ? letting a dog sit in the cab of a truck while a worker has to sit in the back in the rain, or rushing an animal to the veterinarian while ignoring sick relatives or workers.

Zuma has often said he seeks to protect South Africa's diversity and unify its disparate groups, but he has occasionally stirred controversy. In 2006, as deputy president, he said same-sex marriages, which are today protected under South African law, were "a disgrace to the nation and to God."

Survey finds increase in e-reading, drop in paper

2 hrs.

The tastes of the reading public are turning digital.

A Pew Internet Research Center survey released Thursday found that the percentage of Americans aged 16 and older who read an e-book grew from 16 percent in 2011 to 23 percent this year. Readers of traditional books dropped from 72 percent to 67 percent. Overall, those reading books of any kind dropped from 78 percent to 75 percent, a shift Pew called statistically insignificant.

Those owning an e-book device or tablet jumped from 18 percent to 33 percent, with much of that increase coming from last year's holiday season, when millions received Kindles, Nooks and other e-readers as gifts.

Awareness that libraries offer digital texts grew from 24 percent to 31 percent.

The telephone survey of 2,252 people aged 16 and older was conducted from Oct. 15 to Nov. 10. It has a sampling error margin of plus or minus 2.3 percentage points.

Hugh Jackman Reveals The Wolverine Timeline, X-Men Cameo

the-wolverine-hugh-jackman-bone-claws-slice

We?ve seen plenty of set photos from The Wolverine, and so far it looks like we were going to see Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) across plenty of locations.? One of the settings was a Japanese POW camp, so some of the movie has to take place in the past, right?? While that may still be the case, it looks like the majority of the plot will take place in the modern day.? We already knew that the movie was standalone in the sense that there wouldn?t be many mutants, and it wouldn?t pay attention to X-Men Origins: Wolverine.? But the question remains: does The Wolverine take place before X-Men or after X-Men: The Last Stand?

Hit the jump for more.? The Wolverine opens July 26, 2013.

hugh-jackman-the-wolverineSpeaking to Parade [via Bleeding Cool], Jackman reluctantly revealed a couple details about The Wolverine:

You want to get me into trouble, don?t you? [laughs] Okay, the movie takes place after X-Men: The Last Stand. My character is at his lowest. He is supposed to be able to heal himself, but he may encounter someone who has worked out a way to really hurt him.

I forget how Last Stand ended other than Magneto discovering that he hadn?t really lost his powers.? I guess Wolvie would be a little bummed after having to kill Jean Grey/Phoenix, so I suppose the new movie will see him doing a little soul searching in Japan.

Jackman added,

And there is a cameo from one of the past X-Men in it.

Speculate away on who we?ll see in The Wolverine.? I?m thinking Jean Grey to haunt Wolverine, which would also establish the timeline for the audience.

Here?s the official synopsis for The Wolverine:

Based on the celebrated comic book arc, this epic action-adventure takes Wolverine, the most iconic character of the X-Men universe, to modern day Japan. Out of his depth in an unknown world he faces his ultimate nemesis in a life-or-death battle that will leave him forever changed. Vulnerable for the first time and pushed to his physical and emotional limits, he confronts not only lethal samurai steel but also his inner struggle against his own immortality, emerging more powerful than we have ever seen him before.

'The Walking Dead' Season 4 Drama: Kurt Sutter And Others Blast AMC After Series Shakeup

AMC has caused an uproar in Hollywood after announcing that "The Walking Dead" will be renewed for a fourth season, but that Glen Mazzara, the showrunner and executive producer, would be leaving the series.

"My time as showrunner on 'The Walking Dead' has been an amazing experience, but after I finish Season 3, it?s time to move on," Mazarra said in a statement. "I have told the stories I wanted to tell and connected with our fans on a level that I never imagined. It doesn?t get much better than that. Thank you to everyone who has been a part of this journey."

But although Mazzara seemed thankful for his time with AMC, other Hollywood producers feel that he was betrayed. Take Kurt Sutter for example.

The "Sons of Anarchy" showrunner expressed his thoughts on "The Walking Dead" shakeup last night, saying AMC has "no appreciation or gratitude for the effort of it's creative personnel."

Sutter took to his WhoSay account to write:

AMC is run by small-minded, bottom-line thinkers who have no appreciation or gratitude for the effort of it's creative personnel. Time and time again we see events like what happened today with Glen Mazzara. They continue to disrespect writers, sh*t on their audience and bury their network. Mazzara took the work-in-progress that was "Walking Dead" and turned it into a viable TV show with a future. Without him, that future is dim. Showrunners are not development executives, we're not cookiecutter douchebags that you plug into a preexisting model. TWD will suffer. Even Zombies need consistency. "Mad Men" and "Breaking Bad" will be gone soon. So will AMC. I hope their f**king stock takes a dive and the shareholders line up Sapan, Dolan and Collier and sh*t in their open hands. C*nts.

"Last Resort" showrunner Shawn Ryan also shared his take on Mazzara's exit, posting a series of tweets about AMC's decision.

"Common knowledge that AMC cut Breaking Bad shorter than it should have been. Now you have creative differences w/ biggest hit's savior?" Ryan wrote. "With FX, Showtime, HBO, Starz, Cinemax, A&E, TNT and others to sell to, it's a real question now why good show runners should sell to AMC?"

And upcoming "Banshee" executive producer Greg Yaitanes agreed.

Mazzara was the second showrunner on "The Walking Dead." He replaced executive producer and creator Frank Darabont during the second season. Whoever replaces Mazzara will be the show's third showrunner in four seasons.

"The Walking Dead" returns to AMC with new episodes on Sunday, February 9 at 9 p.m. EST.

Analyst Claims 2nd Gen iPad Mini Could Go Into Production Earlier Than Expected

ipad-mini

There are plenty of theories on the success/failure of the new Apple iPad Mini. Many claim that the iPad Mini has finally managed to make a dent on Google?s budget tablet marketshare while some say it has failed to do so. Whatever the reality, we cannot deny the fact that the iPad Mini has certainly given users one more choice at a budget ranged tablet. However, it seems like Apple wants to move on to the second iteration of the tablet as quickly as possible according to an analyst named Doug Freedman from RBC Capital Markets. The analyst did a fair bit of research on the topic by getting in touch with the suppliers of the iPad Mini components and came to a conclusion that Apple could be hurrying to get the 2nd gen iPad Mini into production. The iPad Mini isn?t a high spec?d device, unlike most new Apple products in the market. And this was solely to cut costs, and it didn?t matter much as the device was a budget tablet anyways. But some people were a little let down by the poor pixel density of the iPad Mini in comparison to the Nexus 7 or the Kindle Fire HD (which are smaller in size). So it is very likely that Apple would want to make the new iPad Mini a little more appealing when it comes to the display at least. Not sure if Apple will be able to sell the Retina Display iPad Mini at the same price, but it will certainly influence a lot of new buyers.

The analyst also claims in his report that the next gen iPad Mini could feature components from Texas Instruments, which seems very likely as Apple is eager to shy away from Samsung as the manufacturer of its A-series chips. Previously, it was reported that TSMC could be replacing Samsung to produce A-series chips in 2013. So there?s no clear word on that yet. As Phone Arena rightly suggests, it is rather strange that murmurs of a second gen iPad Mini are already floating when the tablet hasn?t even been launched everywhere. Irrespective of the outcome, we should see Apple getting a tough fight from Android tablet manufacturers in the coming days. Whether the iPad Mini is a success or not is for Apple to clarify. We won?t jump to conclusions until we have the sales figures.

The whole talk about Retina Displays seem to be blown out of proportion. Retina Display or not, people would want a crisp display on a tablet, and it seems like Apple is falling prey to its own marketing gimmick which was set off with the iPhone 4. Wonder what HTC would call the display of the J Butterfly and the Droid DNA which has a pixel density of 440ppi despite being substantially bigger than the iPhone. The bigger the tablet, the lower the pixel density, as there?s more screen real estate. So something which isn?t too pixelated should be considered fine, especially in the budget segment.

New Orleans, LA Research led by Dr. Udai Pandey, Assistant Professor of Genetics at LSU Health Sciences Center New Orleans, has found that the ability of a protein made by a gene called FUS to bind to RNA is essential to the development of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). This discovery identifies a possible therapeutic target for the fatal neurological disease. The research will be available online in the Advanced Access section of the journal Human Molecular Genetics website, posted by December 21, 2012. It will be published in an upcoming issue of the journal.

The current project advances Dr. Pandey's ALS research by teasing out specifically how the FUS gene causes the disease. To find out whether or not the RNA binding ability of FUS was required for the disease pathogenesis, the researchers mutated FUS RNA binding sites and produced a version of FUS that couldn't bind RNA, both with and without ALS mutations. They found that not only could they eliminate FUS RNA binding, but when they blocked RNA binding, they also suppressed ALS related neurodegeneration, demonstrating that the RNA binding ability of FUS is essential to the ALS disease process.

The researchers are working with fruit flies the first animal model of FUS-related ALS, a model Dr. Pandey developed. The fruit flies were engineered to carry and express a mutated human FUS gene. This mutated FUS gene has been shown to be one of the causes of both familial and sporadic ALS. In the fruit flies, the resulting neurodegeneration impairs their ability to walk or climb and the defect is also easily visualized in the structure of their eyes. In addition, the flies carrying the defective FUS gene demonstrate hallmarks of the human disease, such as an age-dependent degeneration of neurons, accumulation of abnormal proteins and a decrease in life span. The fly model is a valuable resource for performing drug screens to identify drugs that could modify the effects of the mutated gene in humans.

"Our findings may pave the way for development of drugs targeting the biological processes responsible for causing ALS, and leading to treatments or prevention of this currently fatal, incurable condition, " notes Pandey. "The fly model is an inexpensive and fast way to study ALS as well as many human diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. Many basic biological processes are well conserved between humans and fruit flies, and nearly 75% of human disease-causing genes are believed to have a functional partner (homolog) in the fly that makes these small animals a highly tractable model system."

"These intriguing findings inspire us and other researchers to search for drugs that can make the defective FUS protein less toxic by targeting is RNA binding as a potential therapeutic intervention," noted Gavin Daigle (Graduate student in the Pandey lab and leading author of the manuscript).

According to the National Institutes of Health, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, sometimes called Lou Gehrig's disease, is a rapidly progressive, invariably fatal neurological disease that attacks the nerve cells (neurons) responsible for controlling voluntary muscles. The disease belongs to a group of disorders known as motor neuron diseases, which are characterized by the gradual degeneration and death of motor neurons. Motor neurons are nerve cells located in the brain, brainstem, and spinal cord that serve as controlling units and vital communication links between the nervous system and the voluntary muscles of the body. Messages from motor neurons in the brain (called upper motor neurons) are transmitted to motor neurons in the spinal cord (called lower motor neurons) and from them to particular muscles. In ALS, both the upper motor neurons and the lower motor neurons degenerate or die, ceasing to send messages to muscles. Unable to function, the muscles gradually weaken, waste away (atrophy), and twitch (fasciculations). Eventually, the ability of the brain to start and control voluntary movement is lost.

Three Books for the Cooks on Your Gift List | Food and More with ...

121612-kessler-2Need a last-minute gift for a home cook in your life? A new cookbook is never unwelcome. Whether it ends up in a kitchen shelf, on a den coffee table or in the bedside nightstand stack, an intriguing cookbook always finds a place in the home of someone who thinks about good food.

Here are three of the year?s best new cookbooks, tailored to different kinds of cooks:

For the classicist: ?The Essential James Beard: 450 Recipes that Shaped the Tradition of American Cooking? by James Beard, edited by Rick Rodgers with John Ferrone (St. Martin?s Press, $35).

Compiled from 12 of the big guy?s classic volumes, this book pretty well taps into the collective unconscious of midcentury America in the way ?Mad Men? never will. Flip through the pages, and you see those recipes your mother cursed her way through for one of those dinner parties when you had to eat early and go upstairs to watch TV while daddy?s boss came over to the house. We?re talking chicken with 40 cloves of garlic as well as sole poached in vermouth with cream and butter. We?re talking souffl?: cheese or crab souffl? to start the meal, frozen lemon souffl? to end it. We?re talking fancy in that vaguely but not quite totally European way that dinner party food never is anymore.

But James Beard was also a champion of real, everyday American food as well. He has recipes for potatoes Anna as well as fully loaded baked potatoes, done just right. And twice-baked potato skins, which were apparently a Beard favorite long before fern bars got a hold of them. This book makes you hungry for a kind of food you rarely see exalted anymore.

For the Southerner: ?Mastering the Art of Southern Cooking? by Nathalie Dupree and Cynthia Graubart (Gibbs Smith, $45).

Here?s the season?s one must-have for anyone with a Southern cooking library. These two longtime friends and collaborators show more than a little nerve evoking the name of Julia Child?s masterwork, ?Mastering the Art of French Cooking.? But they deliver the goods with this comprehensive and deeply researched 7-700720-page volume. The text does a terrific job of explaining the historical underpinnings of Southern cooking methods and the development of the Southern palate. (It offers a great rejoinder to those annoying Yankees who mock the Southern sweet tooth but ignore the uniquely Southern use of vinegar and tingly spice, or fail to notice the brilliant textures of Southern fare.)

Like Child, the authors make the decision to divide the sections by food group rather than region, so the chapter on vegetables and sides is followed by one on eggs, and then we?re on to fish and shellfish. This organization has some obvious advantages for the cook planning dinner, but that means you don?t get an upfront discussion of regional differences between, say, the Appalachians and the Louisiana coast. It?s there, along with sidebars on the different kinds of seasoning pork, from fatback to streak o? lean. You just have to look for the information as you page through. There?s much pleasure in the reading here.

For the Health-minded Cook: ?The New Way to Cook Light: Fresh Food & Bold Flavors for Today?s Home Cook? by Scott Mowbray and Ann Pittman (Oxmoor House: $34.95).

Of all the books that have stacked up on my desk, this is the one that has gotten the most attention from coworkers who?ve asked to take it for a spin. Written by the editors of ?Cooking Light? magazine, this colorful, easy-reading book bursts with ideas. From quick weeknight meals like spiced, honey-brushed chicken thighs to dinner-party ideas like chilled fresh corn soup with king crab and chives, it dishes up a lot of vivid food for your consideration. Small sidebars on technique (such as instructions for cubing a butternut squash) accompany recipes when warranted. Kudos go the editors for paying attention to the international pantry widely available in any good supermarket these days. Soba noodle salad, spicy Thai chicken and coconut soup, and bok choy with soy-ginger drizzle are all good recipes that any home cook can shop for and prepare with ease. Folks who need a concise, well-written recipe and like to see a calorie and nutrition count will love this book.

Israel Kidnapped 173 Palestinians This Month

The Ahrar Center for Detainees Studies and Human Rights reported that Israeli soldiers kidnapped, since the beginning of this month until Tuesday December 18, 173 Palestinians in different parts of the occupied West Bank.

pps.jpg

The center said that most of the arrests took place in Hebron district, in the southern part of the West Bank, as the soldiers kidnapped 45 Palestinians, in addition to 32 in Nablus, 24 in Bethlehem, 22 in Ramallah, 10 in Qalqilia, 9 in Tulkarem, 7 in Tubas and 4 in Jericho.

The Center further reported that Israeli soldiers have escalated their assaults and violations against nonviolent protests held in solidarity with hunger striking detainees in Israeli prisons, especially protests in solidarity with Ayman Sharawna and Samer Al-Eesawy.

It said that Israel is trying to silence and stop all protests that highlight the suffering of Palestinian political prisoners held by the occupation, and is ongoing with its escalation against the detainees and their families.

The Prisoners Support and Human Rights Association (Ad-Dameer) reported that by the beginning of this month, the number of Palestinians held by Israel arrived to 4656.

Ad-Dameer said that there are 178 detainees, including 7 elected members of parliament, are currently held under illegal Administrative Detention orders without charges, and that Israel is currently holding captive 11 women, 177 children, and 13 legislators.

There are 191 detainees who are from historic Palestine (the 1948 territory), and 439 from the Gaza Strip.

Also, there are 529 detainees serving life sentences, 456 detainees serving a sentence above 20 years, 23 who have been imprisoned for more than 25 years, 72 for more than 20 years, and 111 detainees who have been imprisoned before the first Oslo Agreement was signed in 1993.

50 shots fired outside California shopping mall

By Melissa Pamer and Rosa Ordaz, NBCLosAngeles.com

Authorities in Orange County said some 50 shots were fired?outside a mall in Newport Beach, Calif.,?during the busy Christmas shopping season Saturday,?a day after a mass shooting in Connecticut had the nation in mourning and again debating gun control.?

A 42-year-old man was in custody after the sound of gunshots at Fashion Island caused near-pandemonium, according to shoppers. No one was injured, authorities said.

Newport Beach police said the gunman fired some 50 rounds into the air and at the ground in a parking lot outside the Macy's at the upscale mall at?about 4:30 p.m. The?shopping?center?was placed?on lockdown.

Also at NBCLosAngeles:?Alleged 'Ear Gauge Stalker' surrenders, police say

As mall patrons scrambled into hiding places and shop employees rushed to close doors, officers on bike patrol arrested 42-year-old Marcos Sarinana Gurrola of Garden Grove without incident.

"According to witness statements, we had?a male who was shooting a weapon into the air and also at the ground, standing by a vehicle,'' police spokeswoman Kathy Lowe said.?"This was an isolated incident. At no time was he observed pointing the weapon at anyone."

Gurrola was being held on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.

The incident came a day after a horrific mass shooting Friday at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., killed 26, including 20 children. Earlier in the week, a gunman opened fired at a mall outside Portland, Ore., killing two people and seriously wounding a third before killing himself.

Shoppers in Newport Beach said they were on edge.

"Hearing about the shooting on the East Coast and all this other stuff?... I'm just like, this stuff has got to stop happening," said Chance Espinoza.

Orange County Sheriff's Department deputies in flak jackets patrolled the the mall in the aftermath of the shooting as Newport Beach police focused on?a white Honda Civic they said was associated with Gurrola.

Aerial video showed a portion of the mall parking lot taped off with yellow police tape, and evidence markers were placed throughout the area.

Several people at the Nordstrom?and other?stores?told NBC4 that they?had been?on lockdown. Several said they heard the gunshots.

A YouTube user posted video from the parking lot in which repeated shots can be heard.

"I couldn't see who was shooting, but I started to take video in the direction the shots came from while standing behind the car you see in the foreground," the caption said. "My video catches the last two clips he shot and I could finally see him when he shot off the last clip."

Shopper Joe Rubbinaccio?told NBC4?he was on the lowest floor of Macy's when he heard shouting.

"I heard somebody yelling. It sounds like an employee. He was saying, 'Lock the store down!' And he was yelling, 'Don't panic. There's been a shooting,'" Rubbinaccio said. "At that point, you kind of freeze. Your heart skips a beat. ... You just panic, you don't know what to do."

Rubbinaccio said he saw many people running, and others said they had heard 10 to 20 shots.?Rubbinaccio?got away from the scene safely, and had heard one person had been injured in the rush to escape.

Police stopped releasing details after answering initial inquiries.

There were many accounts on Twitter about a man with a gun at the mall.

"My mom, son, and I are shopping at Fashion Island and we heard gun shots we're hiding in the restroom," tweeted @Jennicake.

Fashion Island is an open-air mall in Newport Beach, an affluent coastal community. The mall is located at 401 Newport Center Drive (map).

Germany suspects Islamist link in foiled bomb attack

BERLIN (Reuters) - German authorities said on Friday they suspected radical Islamists of being behind an explosive device found in an abandoned travel bag in Bonn railway station earlier this week.

Police had previously said they did not know whether the planned attack had a political motive. They said the device could have caused a "large and dangerous fireball" if it had detonated and that they were looking for two suspects.

"There are now sufficient indications that we are dealing with an attempted bomb attack by a terrorist organization of a radical Islamist nature," the federal prosecutors' office said in a statement announcing it would take over the investigation.

"There are credible signs that the suspect (who deposited the bag) has connections in radical Islamist circles," it added.

The statement did not explain why they suspected a radical Islamist connection.

Previously the state prosecutors office in Bonn, in western Germany, had been investigating the case.

German Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich said federal and state authorities would work closely together on the case.

"This affair supports our assessment that Germany is in the crosshairs of jihadist terrorism. The security services are making every effort to overcome this threat," Friedrich said.

The bag found in Bonn station on Monday contained a metal pipe filled with ammonium nitrate, four propane gas cartridges, batteries and an alarm clock.

"Further investigations are needed to discover why the explosive charge did not detonate," the federal prosecutors' office said.

Germany narrowly missed an attack in 2006 when two suitcase bombs left on commuter trains in Cologne failed to explode.

German authorities have recently stepped up their surveillance of Salafist groups who espouse a radical version of Islam amid fears they are plotting against the German state.

Germany is home to roughly 4,000 Salafists. They are only a tiny proportion of the total Muslim population of about four million.

Violent beauty at the end of an Alaskan glacier

Flora Graham, deputy editor, newscientist.com

CATERS_Crashing_Glacier_Scares_Birds_02.jpg

(Image: Jon Cornforth/Caters)

You can almost hear the crash of ice on water in this image of an ice sheet shearing off the Chenega glacier in Prince William Sound, Alaska. But when photographer Jon Cornforth pressed the shutter, it was eerily silent.

"I saw the birds erupt in flight before I even saw the ice falling," says Cornforth. "I heard the actual sound a moment later."

The process whereby huge chunks of ice break away from a glacier into the sea is called calving, and as these birds could tell us, it's an impressive event. Huge waves created by falling ice can endanger nearby ships, and the calves themselves may become roaming icebergs.

In the Antarctic, massive icebergs can do far more than frighten the birds. In 2010, a 860-billion-tonne berg threatened marine life and global ocean currents. Five years earlier, the biggest berg ever seen wallowed in the southern seas, cutting off supplies to penguins and Antarctic research bases.

When calving gets out of hand, it can drain glaciers and release water locked up in ice sheets. A time-lapse video of a glacier in Greenland revealed this process in action.

For more cold, hard facts, read our feature on the end of the last great ice age.

"Homeland" leads old favorites in Golden Globes TV race

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Cable shows got more Golden Globe nominations for television than traditional network programs on Thursday as HBO's political movie "Game Change" and Showtime's psychological thriller series "Homeland," - one of last year's big winners - led the race.

"Homeland" led the TV drama category with four nominations including best drama, best actor for Damian Lewis and best actress for Claire Danes in her role as a bi-polar CIA agent tracking down a home-grown Muslim extremist.

The show faces stiff competition from British aristocratic drama "Downton Abbey, which also won an acting nod for Michelle Dockery, along with "Breaking Bad," "Boardwalk Empire," and newcomer "The Newsroom."

"'Homeland' fans seemed to be a little more split on whether creatively the second season was as successful as the first season so it'll be curious if that ends up impacting the show's chances in terms of taking home the awards," James Hibberd, senior staff writer at Entertainment Weekly, told Reuters.

"Downtown Abbey" creator Julian Fellowes told Reuters: "We're up against the big boys now, but the whole thing is very flattering and exciting."

He added: "The themes of the show are pretty international, they're about adjusting to change and being caught out by what life does to you...all of that is common to every country."

HBO movie "Game Change," about the surprise selection of Sarah Palin as John McCain's running mate in the 2008 presidential campaign, landed five nods in the miniseries/movie category, including for actors Julianne Moore and Woody Harrelson.

"'Game Change' is pure awards bait. It's a well-done, smart political drama based on a book, with a certain amount of left-wing political slant and it's very much the type of movie you'd expect awards voters to like," Hibberd said.

New HBO drama "The Newsroom" bumped long-time awards favorite "Mad Men" from the best drama category, surprising many who believed the stylish advertising series was a shoo-in.

"The Globes tend to like the glamorous and sophisticated dramas with big city settings and they tend to shy away from gritty, rural Americana dramas...about sweaty guys with guns instead of charming men in suits, like 'The Newsroom' and 'Boardwalk Empire,'" Hibberd said.

He noted that the only exception was "Breaking Bad," which finally made the best drama category this year after four seasons on air.

Other notable snubs included HBO's epic fantasy drama "Game of Thrones," which failed to pick up any nominations, and Ryan Murphy's miniseries "American Horror Story: Asylum" which landed one best actress nod for Jessica Lange, who took home the award for 2012.

'MODERN FAMILY' LEADS COMEDY RACE

While last year's Golden Globes picked newcomers over staple awards favorites for leading nominees, this year's comedy categories saw the return of many old faces, including "Modern Family," which led the comedy race with three nods.

Comedians Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, who will be hosting the awards ceremony on January 13, each landed a best comedy actress nod in the television race for their long-popular NBC comedies - Fey for "30 Rock" and Poehler for "Parks and Recreation."

"You can be sure that the hosts are going to have fun with this during the telecast, they're going to find ways to play off this during their presentation," Hibberd said.

Fey and Poehler will replace Ricky Gervais at the awards gala dinner, after the British comedian helmed the Globes with his risqu? dry humor for three years.

HBO's raunchy new comedy "Girls" earned two key nominations in the best TV comedy category and best comedy actress for Lena Dunham, while Showtime's new satire "House of Lies" landed the show's lead Don Cheadle a best actor nod.

With the exception of NBC's musical comedy "Smash" in the best comedy series category, no new network comedies managed to break into key races, which Hibberd attributed to a "disappointing" fall season.

Cable channel HBO picked up 17 nominations and Showtime garnered 7 across all major television categories. Networks ABC had 5, CBS and NBC got 4, and Fox got 2.
