Soccer violence verdict sparks deadly riots in Egypt

PORT SAID, Egypt/CAIRO (Reuters) - At least 32 people were killed on Saturday when Egyptians rampaged in protest at the sentencing of 21 people to death over a soccer stadium disaster, violence that compounds a political crisis facing Islamist President Mohamed Mursi.

Armored vehicles and military police fanned through the streets of Port Said, where gunshots rang out and protesters burned tires in anger that people from their city had been blamed for the deaths of 74 people at a match last year.

The rioting in Port Said, one of the most deadly spasms of violence since Hosni Mubarak's ouster two years ago, followed a day of anti-Mursi demonstrations on Friday, when nine people were killed. The toll over the past two days stands at 41.

The flare-ups make it even tougher for Mursi, who drew fire last year for expanding his powers and pushing through an Islamist-tinged constitution, to fix the creaking economy and cool tempers enough to ensure a smooth parliamentary election.

That vote is expected in the next few months and is meant to cement a democratic transition that has been blighted from the outset by political rows and street clashes.

The National Defense Council, which is led by Mursi and includes the defense minister who commands the army, called for "a broad national dialogue that would be attended by independent national characters" to discuss political differences and ensure a "fair and transparent" parliamentary poll.

The National Salvation Front of liberal-minded groups and other Mursi opponents cautiously welcomed the call.

THREATS OF VIOLENCE

Clashes in Port Said erupted after a judge sentenced 21 men to die for involvement in the deaths at the soccer match on February 1, 2012. Many were fans of the visiting team, Cairo's Al Ahly.

Al Ahly fans had threatened violence if the court had not meted out the death penalty. They cheered outside their Cairo club when the verdict was announced. But in Port Said, residents were furious that people from their city were held responsible.

Protesters ran wildly through the streets of the Mediterranean port, lighting tires in the street and storming two police stations, witnesses said. Gunshots were reported near the prison where most of the defendants were being held.

A security source in Port Said said 32 people were killed there, many dying from gunshot wounds. He said 312 were wounded and the ministry of defense had allocated a military plane to transfer the injured to military hospitals.

Inside the court in Cairo, families of victims danced, applauded and some broke down in tears of joy when they heard Judge Sobhy Abdel Maguid declare that the 21 men would be "referred to the Mufti", a phrase used to denote execution, as all death sentences must be reviewed by Egypt's top religious authority.

There were 73 defendants on trial. Those not sentenced on Saturday would face a verdict on March 9, the judge said.

At the Port Said soccer stadium a year ago, many spectators were crushed and witnesses saw some thrown off balconies after the match between Al Ahly and local team al-Masri. Al Ahly fans accused the police of being complicit in the deaths.

Among those killed on Saturday were a former player for al-Masri and a soccer player in another Port Said team, the website of the state broadcaster reported.

TEARGAS FIRED

On Friday, protesters angry at Mursi's rule had taken to the streets for the second anniversary of the uprising that erupted on January 25, 2011 and brought Mubarak down 18 days later.

Police fired teargas and protesters hurled stones and petrol bombs. Nine people were killed, mainly in the port city of Suez, and hundreds more were injured across the nation.

Reflecting international concern at the two days of clashes, British Foreign Office Minister for the Middle East Alistair Burt said: "This cannot help the process of dialogue which we encourage as vital for Egypt today, and we must condemn the violence in the strongest terms."

European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton urged the Egyptian authorities to restore calm and order and called on all sides to show restraint, her spokesperson said.

On Saturday, some protesters again clashed and scuffled with police in Cairo, Alexandria and other cities. In the capital, youths pelted police lines with rocks near Tahrir Square.

In Suez, police fired teargas when protesters angry at Friday's deaths hurled petrol bombs and stormed a police post and other governmental buildings including the agriculture and social solidarity units.

Around 18 prisoners in Suez police stations managed to escape during the violence, a security source there said, and some 30 police weapons were stolen.

"We want to change the president and the government. We are tired of this regime. Nothing has changed," said Mahmoud Suleiman, 22, in Cairo's Tahrir Square, the cauldron of the 2011 anti-Mubarak revolt.

Mursi's opponents say he has failed to deliver on economic pledges or to be a president representing the full political and communal diversity of Egyptians, as he promised.

"Egypt will not regain its balance except by a political solution that is transparent and credible, by a government of national salvation to restore order and heal the economy and with a constitution for all Egyptians," prominent opposition politician Mohamed ElBaradei wrote on Twitter.

The opposition National Salvation Front, responding to the Defense Council's call for dialogue, said there must be a clear agenda and guarantees that any deal would be implemented, spokesman Khaled Dawoud told Reuters.

The Front earlier on Saturday threatened an election boycott and to call for more protests on Friday if demands were not met. Its demands included picking a national unity government to restore order and holding an early presidential poll.

Mursi's supporters say the opposition does not respect the democracy that has given Egypt its first freely elected leader.

The Muslim Brotherhood, which propelled Mursi to office, said in a statement that "corrupt people" and media who were biased against the president had stirred up fury on the streets.

The frequent violence and political schism between Islamists and secular Egyptians have hurt Mursi's efforts to revive an economy in crisis as investors and tourists have stayed away, taking a heavy toll on Egypt's currency.

Special Education Law 101 - Part XIV Expenses and Attorney's Fees

This is another in our?ongoing series?on the basics of special education law.? These posts are meant to be an?introduction?for those new to the field and a refresher for the seasoned veterans.
Attorney's Fees

A prevailing parent can generally get their attorney's fees from a court. IDEA ?615(i)(1)(3).? They are not awarded by hearing officers but are awarded by the court.? Since 2004, a prevailing school district may get attorney's fees from a parent or parent's attorney if the case was frivolous or filed for improper purposes. IDEA ?615(i)(1)(3)(b)(ii)and(iii).

Expenses-Expert witness fees
?????????????????????????????In?Arlington Cent. Sch. Dist Bd. of Educ v. Murphy???540 U.S. 291, 126 S.Ct. 2455, 45 IDELR 267 (6/16/06) the Supreme Court ruled that a parent who prevails in an IDEA case is not entitled to recover expert witness fees under the Act?s provision allowing recovery of reasonable attorney?s fees and costs. The parents cited the legislative history of the Act- including the joint statement of the House/Senate Conference Committee which stated that ?The conferees intend the term ?attorney?s fees as part of the costs? to include reasonable expenses and fees of expert witnesses...???The 6-3 majority of the Court, however, rejected the parents? argument, holding that ?costs? is a legal term of art which does not generally encompass expert witness fees.??Because Congress used the legal term of art ?costs,? rather than ?expenses,? the Court found that there is no need to review the legislative history.??Thus the Court held that a prevailing parent in an IDEA case is not entitled to be reimbursed for expert witness fess.

Democratic support for Hagel grows

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Democratic support for Chuck Hagel's nomination for defense secretary grew on Thursday as the former Republican senator allayed concerns about his past statements on Israel and Iran.

Sens. Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey, Joe Manchin of West Virginia, Chris Coons of Delaware and Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire said they met with Hagel this week and were reassured by his commitment to Israel's security.

Hagel would replace Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, who is stepping down. Despite early misgivings, about a dozen Democrats have announced they would vote for his nomination, and none has declared opposition to President Barack Obama's choice.

Six Republicans have said they would vote against Hagel, with some stating their opposition before Obama announced his pick on Jan. 7.

"Senator Hagel clarified his position on Iran sanctions and Israel, and I am confident he is firmly committed to ensuring a strong U.S.-Israel relationship," Lautenberg said, adding that he and his colleagues will be watching closely "to ensure that issues of concern do not emerge as he takes on this critical position."

Separately, 13 former secretaries of defense and state as well as national security advisers sent a letter to members of the Senate strongly endorsing Hagel. Among them was former Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who has worked for Republican and Democratic administrations, and George Schultz and Brent Scowcroft, veterans of GOP administrations.

"For those of us honored to have served as members of a president's national security team, Sen. Hagel clearly understands the essence and the burdens of leadership required of this high office," the former officials wrote.

Hagel, who served two terms as Nebraska senator, has faced opposition from GOP-leaning outside groups over his past statements about the power of the "Jewish lobby" of pro-Israel groups and his doubts about the effectiveness of unilateral sanctions on Iran.

Not one GOP lawmaker has endorsed the nominee. Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo., writing in an op-ed in The Wall Street Journal on Thursday, all but announced his opposition.

"When we are faced with unpredictable national security crises, we can't afford to have a secretary of defense who has unpredictable judgment," Barrasso wrote.

Other lawmakers have said they are waiting for Hagel's confirmation hearing next Thursday in the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Democrats hold a 55-45 edge in the Senate and would have the votes to confirm Hagel.

"Chuck is a combat veteran and foot soldier who has a unique understanding of the challenges faced by our men and women in uniform, and a practical leader who understands the need for common sense in military spending and national security strategy," Manchin said in a statement.

Coons said he believes Hagel "will be a strong and effective secretary of defense, and I will be proud to vote for his confirmation."

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., who met with Hagel on Thursday, said he had satisfied her concerns and she felt his responses were sincere. A member of the Armed Services Committee, she said she would reserve judgment until after the hearing but described Hagel as well-qualified for the job.

Their statements came shortly after Sen. John Kerry, the president's choice for secretary of state, found himself defending Hagel at his confirmation hearing.

"I know Chuck Hagel. I think he is a strong patriotic former senator, and he will be a strong secretary of defense," Kerry said of Hagel, who, like Kerry, served in Vietnam.

Republican Sen. Bob Corker questioned Kerry about Hagel's support for an 80 percent reduction of U.S. nuclear weapons. Possible reductions and modernization of the nuclear arsenal are major issues for the Tennessee lawmaker, who has the Y-12 nuclear facility in his state.

Corker has expressed concerns about Hagel, questioning whether the Republican's "overall temperament" makes his suitable for the job.

Obama picks foreign policy aide as chief of staff

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama announced Friday he would appoint longtime foreign policy adviser and popular West Wing staffer Denis McDonough to lead his staff.

Obama, appearing with McDonough at the White House, called him indispensable and "a great friend to me and everybody who works here at the White House."

McDonough is taking over the chief of staff job from Jack Lew, Obama's nominee for Treasury secretary.

Obama said McDonough has played a key role in every one of the major national security decisions of his presidency, including the end of the war in Iraq, winding down the war in Afghanistan, responses to natural disasters in Haiti and Japan and repeal of the military's ban on openly gay service members.

McDonough's place in Obama's inner circle was illustrated during the Navy SEAL raid that killed Osama bin Laden in May 2011. He is among those whose images are captured in a White House photograph seated in the situation room with Obama and other senior officials watching the raid unfold.

Obama complimented McDonough for being so humble, visiting troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan and wounded warriors at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center without fanfare or cameras to learn about the needs of the troops. "Then he comes back here to the White House, and he gets it done. That's the kind of focus and the kind of heart I want here in the White House," Obama said.

He said McDonough also is tough, having been raised in Minnesota as one of 11 children. And he teased the former St. John's University football player as making up for modest talents with determination and a high tolerance for pain.

Earlier, McDonough worked as a foreign policy specialist in Congress, including as a senior foreign policy adviser to former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle, D-S.D., before moving to Obama's Senate office.

McDonough's new role was previously filled by Rahm Emanuel, William Daly and Pete Rouse, as interim chief of staff, before Lew.

Other senior personnel shifts were made Friday, including the appointment of Obama chief congressional lobbyist Rob Nabors as McDonough's deputy for policy. Vice President Joe Biden's national security adviser, Tony Blinken, is taking over McDonough's post as deputy national security advisor.

Katy Kale is being promoted from to assistant to the president for management and administration after serving as the deputy for that post. Assistant Attorney General Lisa Monaco, head of the Justice Department's National Security Division, was selected to take over for John Brennan as advisor for homeland security and counterterrorism once his nomination as head of the Central Intelligence Agency is confirmed.

White House communications director Dan Pfeiffer is being promoted to senior advisor. Pfeiffer deputy Jennifer Palmieri will take over as communications director.

Miguel Rodriguez is being named to take over the top lobbying post after serving under Nabors, and Obama campaign staffer David Simas is being named a deputy senior advisor for communications and strategy.

The White House announced Friday that Chris Lu, an aide who has been with Obama since his time as a senator and most recently managed relations with his Cabinet, was leaving his post. The job will be taken over by Danielle Gray, formerly deputy director of the National Economic Council. In a statement, Obama praised Lu for overseeing "one of the most stable and effective Cabinets in history" and said he's asked him to consider taking on another administration job after he takes some time off.

Cameron promises Britons contentious vote on EU future

LONDON (Reuters) - Prime Minister David Cameron on Wednesday promised Britons a vote on whether the country should stay in the European Union or leave, rattling London's biggest allies and some investors by raising the prospect of uncertainty and upheaval.

Cameron announced the referendum would be held by the end of 2017, provided he wins the next election, and said that while Britain did not want to retreat from the world, public disillusionment with the EU was at "an all-time high".

"It is time for the British people to have their say. It is time for us to settle this question about Britain and Europe," Cameron said in a speech, adding that his Conservative party would campaign for the 2015 election on a promise to renegotiate the terms of Britain's EU membership.

"When we have negotiated that new settlement, we will give the British people a referendum with a very simple in or out choice to stay in the European Union on these new terms; or come out altogether. It will be an in-out referendum."

A referendum would mark the second time Britons have voted on the issue. In 1975, they decided by a wide margin to stay in the EU's predecessor, two years after the country had joined.

Domestically, Cameron stands on relatively firm ground. Most recent opinion polls have shown a slim majority would vote to leave the EU amid often bitter disenchantment about its influence on the British way of life. However, a poll this week showed a majority wanted to stay.

Cameron's position is fraught with uncertainty. He must come from behind to win the next election, secure support from the EU's 26 other states for a new British role, and hope those countries can persuade their voters to back the changes.

Critics say that in the long run-up to a vote, Britain would slip into a dangerous and damaging limbo that could leave the country adrift or pushed out of the EU.

The United States, a close ally, is also uneasy about the plan, believing it will dilute Britain's international clout. President Barack Obama told Cameron by phone last week that Washington valued "a strong UK in a strong European Union".

Some of Britain's European partners were also anxious and told Cameron on Wednesday his strategy reflected a selfish and ignorant attitude. However, Angela Merkel, the leader of EU paymaster Germany, was quick to say she was ready to discuss Cameron's ideas.

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius was less diplomatic, quipping: "If Britain wants to leave Europe we will roll out the red carpet for you," echoing Cameron, who once used the same words to invite rich Frenchmen alienated by high taxes to move to Britain.

Billed by commentators as the most important speech of Cameron's career, his referendum promise ties him firmly to an issue that has bedevilled a generation of Conservative leaders.

In the past, he has been careful to avoid bruising partisan fights over Europe, an issue that undid the last two Conservative prime ministers, John Major and Margaret Thatcher.

His speech appeared to pacify a powerful Eurosceptic wing inside his own party, but deepen rifts with the Liberal Democrats, the junior partners in his coalition. Their leader, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, said the plan would undermine a fragile economic recovery.

Sterling fell to its lowest in nearly five months against the dollar on Wednesday as Cameron was speaking.

"BREXIT"?

Cameron said he would seek to claw back powers from Brussels, saying later in parliament that when it came to employment, social and environmental legislation "Europe has gone far too far".

But such a claw back - the subject of an internal audit to identify which powers he should target for repatriation - is likely to be easier said than done.

If Cameron wins the election but then fails to renegotiate Britain's membership of the EU, a 'Brexit' could loom.

Business leaders have warned that years of doubt over Britain's EU membership would damage the $2.5 trillion economy and cool the investment climate.

"Having a referendum creates more uncertainty and we don't need that," Martin Sorrell, chief executive of advertising giant WPP, told the World Economic Forum in Davos. "This is a political decision. This is not an economic decision. This isn't good news. You added another reason why people will postpone investment decisions."

Cameron has been pushed into taking such a strong position partly by the rise of the UK Independence Party, which favours complete withdrawal from the EU and has climbed to third in the opinion polls, mainly at the expense of the Conservatives.

"All he's trying to do is to kick the can down the road and to try and get UKIP off his back," said UKIP leader Nigel Farage.

Eurosceptics in Cameron's party, who have threatened to stir up trouble for the premier, were thrilled by the speech.

Conservative lawmaker Peter Bone called it "a terrific victory" that would unify 98 percent of the party. "He's the first prime minister to say he wants to bring back powers from Brussels," Bone told Reuters. "It's pretty powerful stuff".

Whether Cameron holds the referendum remains as uncertain as the Conservatives' chances of winning the election. They trail the opposition Labour party in opinion polls, and the coalition is grappling with a stagnating economy as it pushes through unpopular public spending cuts to reduce a large budget deficit.

Labour leader Ed Miliband said on Wednesday his party did not want an in/out referendum.

EU REFORM

Cameron said he would campaign for Britain to stay in the EU "with all my heart and soul", provided he secured the reforms he wants. He made clear the EU must become less bureaucratic and focus more on trade deals. It was riskier to maintain the status quo than to change, he said.

"The biggest danger to the European Union comes not from those who advocate change, but from those who denounce new thinking as heresy," he said.

Cameron said the euro zone debt crisis was forcing the bloc to change and that Britain would fight to make sure new rules were fair to the 10 countries that don't use the common currency, of which Britain is the largest.

Democratic consent for the EU in Britain was now "wafer thin", he said. "Some people say that to point this out is irresponsible, creates uncertainty for business and puts a question mark over Britain's place in the European Union," said Cameron. "But the question mark is already there: ignoring it won't make it go away."

A YouGov opinion poll on Monday showed that more people wanted to stay in the EU than leave it, the first such result in many months. But it was unclear whether that result was a blip.

Paul Chipperfield, a 53-year-old management consultant, said he liked the strategy. "Cameron's making the right move because I don't think we've had enough debate in this country," he told Reuters. "We should be part of the EU but the EU needs to recognise that not everybody's going to jump on the same bandwagon."

Asked after the speech whether other EU countries would agree to renegotiate Britain's membership, Cameron said he was an optimist and that there was "every chance of success".

"I don't want Britain to leave the EU," he told parliament later. "I want Britain to reform the EU."

In the 1975 referendum, just over 67 percent voted to stay inside with nearly 33 percent against.

The three C's of Business Marketing | Deborah Peters | Artist | Online ...

Jan 24, 2013 by Fitnessbp

business marketingBusiness Marketing. The three c?s of business marketing. So excited for these next ninety days, can hardly stand it. Since I left my old world of advertising and even art ? in terms of traditional methods and going online, I absolutely LOVE what I?ve learned about business.

Not just business, but the lifeblood of it: Business Marketing. You gotta grab this GOLD I?m referring to, this post is just one of many valuable trainings that has exploded my biz, click here.

My old boss used to say:

?There?s only one direction in business marketing and that is forward. You don?t maintain, and you definitely don?t go backwards to succeed.?

He was right.

website trafficSo, what exactly is are the three c?s of business marketing?

Wow. My entire life story has boiled down to those three words in one form or another. Where I used to get stuck is all three! I simply didn?t know any better. Maybe you?re in this boat. I used to believe if you made a great product (amazing art, etc) that your exposure would naturally happen, you?d capture an audience and of course, covert.

What I didn?t know at the time, was that I was basically playing the lottery with my career. Forget creating art or your product for just a moment. The create part of your business is more along the lines of what you?re doing to create an ?audience? to see your work.

Now, we need tons of traffic (people) to see our product and there has to be a way to capture their info. Step A is all for nothing if step B is not followed through. And then both steps A and B are also for nothing if they don?t lead to conversions. This viral blogging system here automatically sets you up with all of it, click here for a more in-depth video.

blog contentSo,

how many go out of business just by not understanding this process of business marketing?

Let?s use a prime example like real estate. Remember that old saying: ?Location, location location!??

The location for that valuable real estate and price paid for it comes down to a high traffic area, usually because of nice ?amenities?and so forth. So, whoever owns that property can capitalize on the value that?s been created by it?s location ? it will bring traffic (people), ability to capture, and convert some sales. Therefore all surrounding properties including residential and other commercial properties benefit as well.

It?s the same thing with online real estate. In having a website, or preferably a website blog, you?re creating the exact same process with business marketing.

Ah, but not all websites are created equal, are they?

You truly do have to be a Guru to get your website in front of new, high traffic each day and that process, no fooling, is either a lot of expertise and/or time. Average Joe, if he knows what he?s doing ? about 3 years.

How much is your time worth? Mine is worth much more than waiting for that just to be visible, I?m certain yours is too. My mentors Dave and David, after years of learning the ins and outs of Google, organic and paid traffic, conversions, business marketing, etc have designed this viral blogging system so you can plug and play. You can get started today by clicking here.

It?s $25 to get started. How much money and time have you wasted so far?

I?m not guiltless, I?ve been there too and don?t desire it upon anyone. Even my old boss, lol. Truth is, you don?t know what you don?t know. If you found value in this post here on the three ?C?s? of business marketing, imagine how much more you could accomplish using this tool for your online marketing?

I?ll bet you?d Crush It. ;) Think on this, you didn?t find this post by accident~

See ya on the other side-

To your Prosperity!

Algeria: 5 missing foreigners maybe in the desert

ALGIERS, Algeria (AP) ? An Algerian official says the search is on for the five foreigners unaccounted for from the terrorist attack on the remote natural gas site, who may be lost in the vast Sahara desert.

The official, a member of Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal's office, said Tuesday the missing foreigners may have tried to escape into the desert and got lost.

An al-Qaida-affiliated band of fighters attacked the vast natural gas complex on Jan. 16 and 37 hostages, including an Algerian security guard, died in the four day standoff.

Many foreigners escaped from the site during the attack and were found by the army wandering through the desert, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press.

Internet Marketing Plan Increased Visibility in Less Than 2 Weeks ...

I?m sure you?ve probably been in the same situation that our business was recently in; we were so busy tending to our client?s needs and deadlines that we were ignoring our own business marketing.? Our clients were benefitting from our plans for increasing their Internet marketing reach but we had no leads coming in because we were not focusing on our own business.

At last, during the final quarter of last year, our team began to revamp the eZone Virtual Services website and develop our own Internet marketing plan.? The improved website, implemented with all of our search engine optimization techniques and marketing methods launched on January 2, 2013 and within 13 days, we had our internet visibility equal to that of a competitor who has been actively marketing for 3-4 years or longer!

Our Internet Marketing Plan:

Website Flow and Keyword Research

First, we laid out a flow chart of all the pages we wanted in the website. Next, keyword research was performed and the page content was written so it was optimized for the phrases that best fit our business needs.? We covered all of the the basic SEO techniques in the new site and on January 2nd, we launched.

Website Verification and Sitemap Submissions

Launch date had a number of things going on ? verifying the site with the search engines and submitting the sitemap so that we didn?t have to wait for the search engines to find the website on their own.

Assess and Improve the Website

Next was assessing for improvements and implementing those improvements. Various tools were used to inspect everything from the html coding to the css and whether each page and image was optimized properly.

Implement Internet Marketing Plan

Blogging

We also began our Internet marketing plan at this point. A schedule was created for blogging, including topics and keywords to target (that are relevant to the site) and what date they would be published.

Facebook Business Page

We incorporated the blogging schedule into the Facebook Page posting schedule as well as other interesting, action-generating posts.

Twitter

Our Twitter schedule, of course includes links to recent blog posts as well as interesting points from past posts with links to them. Time has been put aside to interact personally on Twitter in order to join discussions and build relationships as well as spread other people?s messages that are relevant to our business services.

The above is just a simple, basic overview of our efforts ? I have not included every method we are using so as not to bore you.? My point is however, with these basic techniques along with a simple marketing plan, we were able to meet and in some cases exceed the Internet Marketing quality of some of our competitors:

HBT: Jim Rice gets hypocritical on today's players

There is nothing sadder ? in any walk of life, not just baseball ? than hearing older people claim that the kids today just don?t do things the right way and how back in my day it was better and all of that jazz.

Such a stance simultaneously suggests?narcissism, arrogance, ignorance and pessimism. ?Only I and my friends did things properly,? such people are saying. They?re also saying, however, that they pay no attention to new developments in the world and that, inevitably, things will always grow worse over time rather than better, which runs directly counter to most developments in human history. ?And more than anything, such statements always ? always ? reflect more poorly on the person uttering them than they reflect on those whom he or she is deriding.

With that in mind, I give you Jim Rice:

?The game is still the same (but) the players have changed. There are no fundamentals in the game anymore. ?That?s why I really enjoyed the game was because of the fundamentals. We had to do fundamentals. If you didn?t know the fundamentals, you weren?t playing ??I don?t want to [get back in the dugout] because guys are not subject to change. ?If you went back to giving guys one- or two-year contracts, it?s a different story. When you give guys five-, six-, seven-, 10-year contracts, they don?t have to change. Their money is in the bank. And if the thing doesn?t go right, who do they blame??

Just so you know, Jim Rice (a) is sixth all-time in grounding into double plays, having led his league four straight years in his prime; (b) was a poor defensive player; and (c) most damningly to his above comments, once signed a seven-year contract, making him the highest-paid player with the longest contract in all of the game at the time.

Why the interviewer for that article didn?t ask Jim why it was OK for him to have poor fundamentals and receive long-term contracts but it?s not OK for players today to do so is beyond me. For that matter, I?m baffled why he didn?t even ask Rice to offer some evidence regarding how fundamentals are lacking in today?s players. ?To the contrary, I suspect that if we were able to quantify such things, today?s players would be found to be far more athletic and fundamentally-sound than players of the 70s.

Not that I?d expect Rice to realize how foolish he sounds. ?He?s just the latest person to claim that the world is going to Hell in a hand basket. ?Funny how it never seems to actually get there.

a new opinion in Computer about Sony Playstation Eye Camera

Product Type: Sony web cams

Newest Review:?... you to video chat through the Playstation Network (PSN). In an annoying move, Sony appeared to have made this the only compatible USB c... more

I find this camera fascinating. Well, not necessarily the camera itself, more the uses it has and the focus Sony has made on re-using it time and time again.

If you don't know, this is a USB camera which is intended for use with the Sony Playstation 3 (PS3). It consists of a fairly low resolution camera on a swivel and tilt base with a microphone. It is a pretty basic design. It was originally created for the intention of personalising the PS3 and it's games as well as enabling you to video chat through the Playstation Network (PSN). In an annoying move, Sony appeared to have made this the only compatible USB camera for the PS3 in order to boost their sales of the rather overpriced device. Sales of the PS Eye were rather small until Sony released the PS Move which used the PS Eye as the primary sensor for the peripheral. As the PS Eye became an essential for a number of games instead of an expensive add-on, sales rose greatly.

As I have mentioned, the capabilities of the camera as a video capture device are pretty low. The resolution it captures is a mere 640?480 @ 60Hz which does not perform greatly in low-light situations but offers decent clarity in high-light ones. The colours captured by the camera are often dull and unrealistic. For this reason, pictures from this camera are poor but video for streaming is usually the best experience mainly because of the low-quality file it produces being easy to transmit.

The PS Eye features a swivel and tilt base which enabled precise angling of the camera for all situations. No matter what angle you place it at, it maintains stability through the use of a large base which has a foam-like pad at the bottom to discourage (but certainly not prevent) slipping.

Summary: Only essential for the PS Move and if your only choice is to video chat using the PS3

Fort Bragg expects to stop using goats for trauma training as military moves to ban it

FAYETTEVILLE, N. C. ? On average, soldiers on Fort Bragg slaughter 300 goats a month for medical trauma training meant to help save lives in battle.

Animal activists say the animals are shot, stabbed, bludgeoned and blown up to simulate the types of injuries soldiers face.

For three decades, the activists have tried to end the practice. Their efforts appear to have finally paid off.

The 2013 National Defense Authorization Act, signed into law this month, requires the Department of Defense to provide Congress with a strategy and detailed timeline by March for the replacement of animals for medical training.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, which applauds the move, said Fort Bragg training accounts for about a third of the animal deaths caused by the military each year.

Government documents show that officials at Fort Bragg's Army Special Operations Command solicited up to 3,600 goats for use in training last year.

The documents show that the command planned to use about 300 goats a month.

Officials with the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School and Army Special Operations Command confirmed that they use animals for training but said they could not comment further.

The officials said they have not been given specific guidance on the requirements outlined by the authorization act.

PETA and other groups have protested the use of live animals in military training, advocating for simulation and other modern, nonanimal methods, said Justin Goodman, director of the group's Laboratory Investigations Department.

In the 1980s, advocates were able to stop the use of dogs and cats in the training, Goodman said, but the language in the authorization act represents the first time Congress has required the military to formalize its efforts to end all animal use.

Goodman said 10,000 animals are killed each year during trauma training conducted by the military and private military contractors.

Up to a third of those animal deaths are attributed to training on or around Fort Bragg, and several thousand more are attributed to civilian contractors who do work for various military groups.

Dr. John Pippin, a Dallas cardiologist who advocates on behalf of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, said it is important to realize that this isn't a choice between saving a soldier and saving a goat.

"The use of goats and pigs for this type of training, if it was ever the best method, is not the best now," he said. "Anyone who tells you it's choosing between a goat and a soldier is devoid of a valid argument. That's a cop-out. It's not the only way or the best way."

The committee helped to craft a bill last year that would force the Department of Defense to end the practice of using live animals in trauma training within five years.

That bill did not pass the U.S. House but served as the basis for the language inserted into the authorization act, officials said.

Pippin said the use of live animals in medical training was commonplace when he went through medical school in the late 1970s.

But even then, he said, many questioned the practice.

"We just knew, intuitively, that this was not relevant," he said.

Now, only about five medical schools out of nearly 180 in the United States and Canada use live animals as part of their curriculum, Pippin said.

'Cut suits'

Pippin and Goodman advocate for the use of various simulators, including "cut suits" that they say are better suited for the trauma training.

Some simulators look like humans, they said, and feature lifelike skin, anatomically correct organs, breakable bones and realistic blood flow.

Others can be worn by humans while still providing many of the realistic features.

"The anatomy and physiology of a goat and a pig are dramatically different from humans," Goodman said. "The simulators are better in all regards."

Goodman and Pippin said many military schools moved to simulators long ago, including the Rascon School of Combat Medicine at Fort Campbell, Ky., the Air Force Center for Sustainment of Trauma and Readiness Skills and the Navy Trauma Training Center.

PETA officials said Camp Lejeune, at one point, also stopped using live animals in training.

Lejeune officials did not respond to inquiries, but government documents show that officials on the Marine base do use live animals for trauma training, stating on bid paperwork that the live tissue training "has proven to save lives and lessen the severity of injury in combat."

Goodman said PETA would ask the Marine Corps to cease the use of animals in training.

Part of the problem, Goodman said, is that the training curriculum within the military is decentralized, with no overarching structure.

The use of live animals occurs on at least 20 bases across the country, he said.

But, he said, it's largely nonexistent in other parts of the world.

Twenty-two of the 28 countries in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization have banned the use of live animals in training, Goodman said.

And news reports indicate that German officials have barred U.S. soldiers stationed in that country from training involving live animals in the past.

Once the military's ban on using live animals is in place, Goodman said, it will bring the U.S. up to the standards set by those countries, while improving the training itself.

"It's a win-win," he said.

Relationship Advice You Don't Want (But Need)! | The Dangerous ...

Love-Wallpaper

Love is overrated! Whether admittedly or not we all subscribe to the cliched story of boy meets girl and they fall in love and live happily ever after. You know the story. Lucky for us, sooner or later the firm hand of realism slaps us in the face as we realize that ?love? is actually much more complicated than that.

I always wondered why friendships appear (in most cases at least) to be so much easier than relationships. Believe it or not, the best answer for me came from Kanye West, in his song with Jay Z ?No Church in the Wild? where he said ?love is cursed by monogamy?. However you feel about his brand of music, I think the man made a good point in that statement.

We can have multiple friends and the friends wouldn?t get jealous of each other (one should hope) but this rationale cannot be applied to relationships. The norm in relationships is to have one partner, and one partner only. Although the regular activities you perform with that partner are typically the same as those you perform with your friends apart from sex (in most cases anyway).

In addition to this I believe people jump into relationships too quickly. A friendship must be established in order for any relationship to stand a chance. My mother once told me

?Now you may be surrounded by friends, but when you get married it will just be you and your husband. On a long drive home you will need to be able to talk to him? about anything. If you find yourself scraping for a conversation or having to think twice about what you do or say, then why are you together? He must be your FRIEND?.

I?ve got to thank my mother for possibly the realest relationship advice I?ve gotten to date! According to research carried out by the Guardian, in 2010 34% of marriages were doomed to failure by the time they reached their 20th anniversary. Perhaps its because most couples don?t approach relationship as friends first?

Another very British dating trend is occurring ? couples have gradually decided not to get married all together. In 2012 5.9 million people were cohabiting in the UK, double the figure of cohabitation in 1996. Are people less into making commitments? Is marriage becoming less relevant? Are couples cohabiting rather than get married for economic reasons?

The real reason for this trend is a whole different topic for discussion in itself. Whats for sure is that social and economic pressures definitely influence our outlook on relationships, marriage, and commitment. However, the more appealing idea is that of Mr. Right and happily ever after.

So why jump at the idea of finding your superman without first figuring out whether or not you can fly (Katt Williams on Barack Obama). I say jog on to the nearest store and buy yourself a cape! You cannot help who you like but I believe falling in love is a choice. So the sooner we stop day dreaming and start looking at ?love? more realistically, the sooner we may actually have that 1950?s ?white picket fence? happiness.

There are many different means of promoting your organization online, but one of the most effective remains the e-mail campaign.

Weighing Your Alternatives

For messages, you have three choices of computer software, each with distinct benefits and drawbacks. You are able to be your own personal machine and install software on your desktop. It is possible to install software on the internet server youre using. Or it is possible to join an ASP managed service.

The obvious good thing about a hosted machine is that getting your e-mails shipped can be your hosts concern. Says Dr. Ralph Wilson, of Wilson Internet Services, With computer or web server software, basically youre responsible to have them delivered Whereas if youre paying somebody else for that company, its their job, and lots of them go on it very seriously. A managed machine starts with a monthly payment for 500 or 1,000 emails and as your email database increases the purchase price creates.

With desktop server application, the greatest benefit could be the cost. You are able to pay a one-time fee for a desktop machine and run it forever. Renting a web server is also relatively cheap.

Beating the Blockers

If you use desktop or server based application, there are a few basic guidelines you can follow to help your messages ensure it is to your visitors inboxes.

1. Avoid symptoms of spam. A number of features that trigger spam filters. Your deliverability can be increased by you by avoiding certain problems in your issue lines:

Dont use all caps.

Dont use HTML messages which can be primarily design.

Dont try to trick filters by replacing characters with asterisks or breaking words up with punctuation marks. Filters are getting wiser, and you could find yourself on a black list.

Dont use careless HTML.

Dont use large or small fonts. Stick to H1, H2, or H3 heading tags.

2. Consider sender accreditation

Bonded sender businesses as and have connections with internet service providers. Reliable organizations may proceed through these companies to obtain secure passage past spam filters. Theres an expense with this service, but its an ideal way to make certain your emails are getting delivered.

What to Try to find in a Hosted Server

There are always a quantity of things you should ask before joining:, if you choose to use a managed service

What steps do they take to prevent spammers from enrolling? An excellent host company may have measures in place, such as for example proved opt-in, to make sure that theyre not allowing spammers to become listed on.

Do they give transformation monitoring? Similar to an ad monitoring program, many published servers now let you see how many of your e-mail users clicked right through to your website, how many click-throughs triggered revenue, and how much money you made from your strategy.

What kind of customer care do they supply? The answer can be often told by you to that question by simply just how long it will take them to respond to your inquiries. Ask if they charge extra for the company and if full phone support is offered by them.

Nevertheless you decide to increase your business, dont overlook the power of email marketing to increase your customer base and improve your sales volume. remove frames

Don't feel compelled to permanently reassign essential job functions ...

While the California Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA) requires employers to reasonably accommodate disabled employees, there are limits.

One involves the permanent reassignment of essential functions to other employees. Employers don?t have to push essential functions onto other employees if it?s clear the disabled employee will never be able to take those functions back.

Recent case: Mohammad is an electrical engineer with specialized expertise in designing and testing high-voltage electric power systems. He was hired largely because of his experience and skill working with high voltage. One of the essential functions listed in Mohammad?s job description was testing high-voltage systems. Mohammad spent much of his time designing such systems and even did some limited testing while his designs were in the development pipeline.

Then Mohammad was diagnosed with several back disabilities, including spinal osteoarthritis, spinal stenosis, radiculitis and herniation. He underwent back surgery and went out on leave. During the next year, he returned to work for just one week. He could not sit for more than one hour, stand for more than 10 minutes or lift more than five pounds.

Then he began taking the prescription drug Percocet, which is a narcotic used to treat severe pain. Because of Percocet?s narcotic effect, Mohammad?s doctors forbade him from getting anywhere near high-power electrical circuits. Percocet can cause drowsiness, dizziness and lapses in concentration.

Mohammad asked his employer to provide reasonable accommodations so he could return to work. He insisted that high-voltage testing wasn?t really an essential function of his job.

His employer said it was essential and that it had no obligation to assign those essential functions to another employee when it looked like Mohammad would continue to use Percocet indefinitely.

Mohammad was terminated after spending more than a year on short-term disability leave. He sued, alleging failure to accommodate.

But the court threw out his case. It reasoned that testing high-voltage designs was an essential function of his job. After all, Mohammad was hired in large part because he had expertise in that kind of testing. Plus, although he hadn?t done much testing while working for the company, he had tested other designs there and could have been expected to test his own designs when they neared completion.

The court then explained that under FEHA, employers don?t have to permanently reassign essential functions to other employees as a reasonable accommodation. Doing so would, in fact, be unreasonable. In this case, it was pretty clear that Mohammad wasn?t going to be testing high-voltage designs anytime soon. (Khan v. S&C Electric Company, No. 3:11-CV-03261, ND CA, 2012)

Final note: This case might have turned out differently if Mohammad?s doctors thought he could wean himself off Percocet, have more surgery to end the pain or otherwise return to better function within some reasonable time. But that simply wasn?t the case.

Plus, the employer had been extremely generous with leave time during Mohammad?s post-surgery period. He clearly wasn?t due any additional FMLA leave. Nor could he reasonably have argued that additional time off would itself have been a reasonable accommodation, given that he had already missed a year of work.

Madeleine Albright Surfaces to Defend Chuck Hagel on Israel

13 Jan 2013, 1:15 AM PDT post a comment

Said Albright:

I think that's ridiculous. I think that Senator Hagel has been somebody that has voted for help for Israel over the years, has made very clear his support for Israel, and has talked about the historic bond. And so I think that is just a charge that doesn't make sense at all.

Apparently, Albright missed the fact that CAIR praised Hagel for trying to undermine Israel's plan to strike Hezbollah in 2006.?

Maybe she missed the fact that Hagel was one of only four senators who refused to sign a letter in support of Israel in 2004 or that, in 2005, he was one of 27 senators who refused to ask the Palestinian Authority to bar terrorist groups from participating in national elections.

Or maybe she missed Hagel's ongoing support for Iran.?

Either way, she either doesn't understand the real Chuck Hagel or she is covering for him.?
