My name is Brad Callen. I?ve been marketing online since the early 2000s and have been fortunate enough to have generated millions of dollars solely from the internet.

I got my start online in the weight loss niche, marketing an eBook I?d written that is no longer on the market. It was an eBook called "Ultimate Weight Loss Revealed".

Here?s a picture of my very first website and product. Not too bad for having no idea what I was doing, eh? :-)

While marketing to that industry, my website achieved #1 and #2 Google rankings for every single major keyword related to the weight loss niche!

That?s pretty much unheard of to rank #1 or #2 for every single major keyword in a niche, but I did it all from my 2 bedroom apartment, on a dial-up internet connection!

At the time, My dinky little website selling my eBook was beating out fortune 500 companies like Jenny Craig and LA Weight Loss, who had million dollar marketing and advertising budgets. I was spending exactly $0.00 and I was doing this from my 2 bedroom apartment, on a dial up modem!

I?ve since moved out of the weight loss industry completely and into something I have much more passion for? Read more?

This year, Enterprise Services, Technology Services, and HP Networking are being honored as the 2012 Communications Market Acceleration Partner of the Year.? Microsoft recognized HP as a key partner who has proven expertise in planning, deployment, management and support of Microsoft Lync Voice. This is the inaugural year for the Microsoft award, and HP will be acknowledged at the company?s upcoming Worldwide Partner Conference in Toronto, Canada. Our team will be there to accept the award, and who knows maybe catch a Blue Jay baseball game (well after the business ends!)

?

??We are excited to receive such recognition from a strategic partner like Microsoft,? said Greg Robins, vice president, Global Alliances, Enterprise Services. ?As an Agility Alliance Partner, they are a core component of our strategy toPeople at computer.JPG deliver innovation via the cloud and converged communications, and we appreciate the support and honor

?

For those who are unaware, or new to this technology, Lync is an enterprise-ready unified communications platform that lets users make phone calls, host web conferences, track contacts, send instant messages, launch audio ??all from a single interface.

?

To achieve this award, HP made this a companywide initiative focusing on all business units from services, software, and hardware. ?

ECS can support these services directly from HP?s data centers, or in a mixed/hybrid environment with some business critical data and applications hosted at HP data centers and others hosted by Microsoft.

?

The Enterprise Services Unified Communications teams separate HP from the competition ? these HP teams are widely recognized within Microsoft as one of the few teams? with the ability to? install, configure, manage and maintain a complete Microsoft unified communications and collaboration solution for the largest global companies virtually anywhere in the world

?

HP Enterprise Services is enthusiastic about the current benefits we are seeing with Lync, and most importantly winning this award. If you have any questions about how Lync Voice or other collaboration offerings can optimize your communications within your enterprise visit us here.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are divorcing, bringing an end to one of Hollywood's most unexpected marriages, one that spawned euphoric couch-jumping on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" and endless speculation in the tabloids.

After five years of marriage, Holmes filed for divorce from Cruise on Thursday, said Cruise's lawyer Bert Fields.

"This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family," Holmes's attorney Jonathan Wolfe said Friday. "Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest."

"Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children," Cruise's representative, Amanda Lundberg, told The Associated Press. "Please allow them their privacy to work this out."

Cruise, 49, wed the 33-year-old Holmes in 2006 in an Italian castle after publicly declaring his love on "The Oprah Winfrey Show." His starry-eyed celebration (in which he famously jumped on the studio couch) was a public display that forever after altered the moviegoing public's perspective of the action star.

The couple has a 6-year-old daughter, Suri, who has herself become a staple of the tabloids and celebrity magazines.

Their plan to divorce was first reported by People magazine.

Holmes appeared to have filed anonymously, a method of divorce filing legal in New York.

Cruise has two children with his previous wife, Nicole Kidman. The actor was also previously married Mimi Rogers.

This is Holmes' first marriage.

Cruise and Holmes had a whirlwind romance ? the "Dawson's Creek" actress confessed she had a childhood crush on the "Top Gun" star ? and were engaged at the Eiffel Tower. An elaborate wedding followed before a Church of Scientology minister.

"I can't be cool. I can't be laid-back," Cruise said on "The Oprah Winfrey Show." ''Something happened and I want to celebrate it."

But the couple's romance was instant fodder for the tabloids, who nicknamed them "TomKat" and chattered about everything from the couple's fights and Suri's shoes to Holmes' conversion to Scientology.

Cruise showed up alone to premieres for his new musical film "Rock of Ages." Holmes also was absent from an award ceremony earlier this month at the Friar's Club, where Cruise was given the fourth ever Friars Club Entertainment Icon Award.

Cruise said at the time that Holmes was overseas and the family would reunite in Iceland for Father's Day.

Cruise also recently starred in 2011's "Mission: Impossible ? Ghost Protocol" and 2010's "Knight and Day."

Holmes' recent films include Adam Sandler's "Jack and Jill" and the made-for-TV movie "The Kennedys," in which she played Jackie Kennedy.

Venice Nutrition Blog: Health, Fitness, Weight Loss, Increase Lean ...

If you are anything like me, you?ve been waiting all year for the summer! The sun is shining on your morning walk.?? The balmy nights are perfectly relaxing.? And there?s nothing better than joining your best friends and family for delicious food and a cold drink at a summer cookout.?? So why is this blog titled ?Surviving? Summer BBQ?s?? What?s not to love?? ?

Well, for many people who have made the effort to eat right, a BBQ can cause anxiety.?? You may worry that you?ll fall off the ?health wagon? and lose the habits that you?ve worked so hard on all year long.? After all, BBQ?s involve loads of not- so- healthy food, tons of alcohol, and friends and family who may not live the lifestyle that you and I do.? ?Not to worry!? Below are some tried and true tips, as well as a few smart recipe ideas to help you enjoy your next BBQ without compromising your healthy lifestyle.?

1.? ?Remember, balance is the key to a healthy lifestyle.? There will be times in life when you may overindulge; an extra glass of your favorite wine, a heaping scoop of ice cream or maybe even a pile of fall ?off- the bone ribs at a cookout.?? Taking part in the occasional treat is normal, in fact it?s great!? Because if you can live a healthy lifestyle while still allowing yourself the occasional treat, you?ve truly mastered balance and that leads to permanent change! The lesson to be learned here?? A little indulgence is good for you and keeps you from craving or feeling deprived.? Just make sure to get right back on track with a balanced meal at the next opportunity to get your metabolism moving in the right direction again.

2.? Plan for the event.? If you know that you have a summer cookout planned for this Saturday, aim to be extra consistent with your nutrition and fitness routine all week long.? Acknowledge the fact that you may overindulge at this Saturday?s BBQ, and actually plan the ?off? meal into your week.? Use this ?system? of acknowledging the ?off? meal and planning it to help you to make extra effort all week to eat clean, balanced meals every few hours.? Let the fact that you?ll be indulging on Saturday spur you to kick butt at the gym and make the most of every workout all week long.? The process here is both physical and mental.? By working extra hard all week to make room for this Saturday?s fiesta, you?ll physically be in prime fat burning mode by the time the party rolls around.? Mentally, you?ll be able to let go of any guilt you may normally have (see Tip #1 above as a reminder about the importance of balance).? After all, you?ve worked hard all week and you?ve planned to relax and indulge a bit with your friends and family.? It?s a win, win situation!

3.? Believe it or not, it?s a bad idea to deprive yourself all day Saturday to save ?room? and ?calories? for the big event.? If you walk into a BBQ with every type of food imaginable at your fingertips and you haven?t eaten all day, you are heading for disaster!? Always eat balanced meals one hour within waking and every 3 hours before a cookout.? This way your mind is in control of your food choices, not your empty stomach!? It?s a smart idea to also eat one hour before the event.? Try snacking on a protein bar before the party to help keep blood sugar stable and allow you to make conscious food choices when you arrive.

4.? It doesn?t hurt to bring along some healthy and delicious choices, or at least know how to identify them at a cookout.?? Do your best to build a balanced plate with some protein and carbohydrates and keep in mind that most dishes offered at a BBQ will have more than enough fat (way more actually!).? ?Whether you are hosting the event or attending, the following list makes for delectable (and healthy) party food that everyone will enjoy.

-Try Marinated or BBQ grilled chicken breasts, shrimp, pork tenderloin, salmon steaks or filet mignon (the leanest red meat) on the grill.? Meat, poultry or seafood and vegetable kabobs are also healthy and a fun change of pace.

-Instead of regular hamburgers, try using 97% lean ground beef.?? Serve with all the regular toppings and whole wheat buns.

-Chop a mixture of your favorite vegetables in large chunks (corn, tomato, zucchini, red onion, bell peppers) or try whole asparagus with the bottom of the stalk cut off.? Toss in a bowl with quality extra virgin olive oil, kosher salt and fresh ground black pepper.? Grill until slightly charred to really bring out the flavors.

-Instead of plain old pasta salad with a few veggies tossed in for good measure, go in the opposite direction.? Use your favorite pasta salad recipe only make a few adjustments.? Triple the vegetable content (and vary it up- grape tomatoes, fresh bell pepper, onion, cucumber, banana peppers, etc.) and use the pasta as the filler, not the main event.? Use a reduced fat version of your favorite dressing such as low fat Italian dressing in place of regular.? If using a mayo based dressing, try cutting the amount of mayo in half and replacing the rest with plain, low fat yogurt- it will add a little tang and a lot of flavor.?? Lastly fresh herbs like parsley or basil really make a dish stand out from the crowd.

-Try whipping up a low fat dip like hummus or mango salsa (combine chopped mango, red onion, a small amount of minced garlic and jalapeno with a splash of lime juice and good olive oil.? Toss with fresh cilantro and season to taste with salt and pepper).? Serve with home -made baked whole wheat pita chips.? (Hint- Mango salsa also works beautifully on grilled meat, poultry and seafood.)

-Fresh fruit platters are always well received and a perfectly sweet way to complete a meal.??? Try serving a variety of fruit with a home-made dip of Plain Yogurt, vanilla extract, honey and lemon zest or try our Pina Colada Dip found in your Recipe Collection inside your software!

5.? Speaking of, check out some of these BBQ friendly recipes found inside your software in the Recipe Collection:

Creamy Shrimp Salad, Boca Burgers, Shrimp and Pasta Salad, Restaurant Worthy Steak on the

Grill, BBQ Shrimp Kabobs, Grilled Fish w/ Tomato and Herbs, Pina Colada Dip w/ Fruit,

Strawberry Lemon Frozen Yogurt (try turning these into frozen pops for easy serving!), Greek

Brown Rice Salad, Cheesy Zucchini (an odd choice for a BBQ but it?s really good, promise!),

Grilled Asparagus

6.?? Stay hydrated with plenty of water to beat bloat, fatigue and headaches. ??If you?re the host, try serving homemade lemonade with ice water, freshly squeezed lemon and lemon slices sweetened with Stevia or Truvia.

7. ?Get creative with your alcohol. I like Skinny Girl Margarita in a glass with a ton of flavored seltzer water which adds fizz and extra fluid to make the drink last. Light beer or wine is also a good choice. The rule of thumb with alcohol is, use the drink to replace the starchy carb in the meal.? So basically you would have your protein and fat with some light carbohydrates like grilled veggies or salad plus a drink or two.? If you must splurge on both carbs and alcohol, go for a lighter drink like the ones described above and keep it to a 2 drink maximum if possible.

8. Do something active!? At my house we play ?bags? (also known as Cornhole to all of you in the South) or go swimming with my nephews.? The point is, if you keep mingling and keep moving, your less likely to hover at the dessert table and this means less mindless munching!

9. And my last tip?? I find that after a day cookout, I?m exhausted by 5 or 6 pm, which is frustrating because clearly it?s much too late for a nap and I?m pretty sure I can?t get away with going to sleep at that time!? So I take a power walk outside after the cookout. ?It helps me to burn off some of the treats from the cookout but most importantly, it rejuvenates me enough to stay awake until bedtime.

Remember, the summer is all about having fun, enjoying the weather and family and friends and relaxing!? The great thing is, you can absolutely do all of that while sticking to your goals with the tips above.? Cheers to an amazing summer!

My best,

Valerie Cogswell

Ten things you should know about business ethics and anti ...

1. Two thirds of respondents to Ernst & Young?s recently commissioned report on fraud and corruption in the Middle East said that fraud and bribery was a ?major problem? in the Middle East, but only 14 per cent believed that corruption was an issue in their company. (May 2012)

2. The UK Bribery Act 2010 includes a corporate offence of ?failing to prevent bribery? by persons associated with an organisation. This applies to any foreign (i.e. non-UK) business which conducts any business in the UK. It could therefore have significant implications for regional businesses. The punishment is an unlimited fine.

corruption bribery

3. The only defence to a charge of ?failing to prevent bribery? is to put into place ?adequate? anti-bribery procedures, on which the UK Ministry of Justice has published guidance and companies in the region have introduced as part of their standard working practices.

4. The UK Bribery Act extends to any act or omission (i) that take place in the UK or (ii) are done by a person having a ?close connection? with the UK (e.g. a place of incorporation, citizenship or place of residence) regardless of where in the world the act or omission takes place.

5. Bahrain, Kuwait, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen have each signed and ratified the United Nations Convention Against Corruption. Saudi Arabia and Syria have signed the Convention but not ratified its terms. Oman is not a signatory to the Convention.

6. Laws on corruption (with sentences of up to 20 years) were introduced by the Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum in late 2009 (Law No. 37 of 2009).

7. It was reported in June 2012 that the State Audit Bureau of the UAE has been instructed to prepare a new anti-corruption law to fulfil the country?s commitment to the UN Convention on Corruption.

8. Article 186 of the Bahraini Penal Code defines bribery as being when a civil servant or officer entrusted with public service asks for or accepts a gift, privilege or promise to be given in consideration of doing an act or omitting to do an act involved in the duties of his office. It can be money, objects of value, advantages or merely a promise.

9. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has established the ?Anti-corruption National Commission? aimed at protecting integrity, promoting the principle of transparency, and fighting against financial and administrative corruption. As an example of the increased focus on corruption in Saudi Arabia, in May 2012, the Board of Grievances jailed 7 men for up to 5 years each and fined them each up to US$186,000 for their role in bribery that permitted the building of residential neighbourhoods in flood-prone areas.

10. The strictness and the ambition of UAE Law No. 37 of 2009, the Bahraini Penal Code, the UK Bribery Act 2010 and the work by the State Audit Bureau of the UAE are all part of a significant worldwide trend of amplified anti-corruption enforcement. The enforcement of anti-corruption legislation is growing in the course of increasingly publicised proceedings, which have already generated several billion dollars in fines worldwide.

Fighting Western wildfires: Does Forest Service have enough air power?

With huge wildfires scorching the West, the US Forest Service chief says the aging and depleted fleet of air tankers is just one part of the firefighting mix. But he has secured extra aircraft for the season.

By Gloria Goodale,?Staff writer / June 25, 2012

As large fires scorch vast tracts of land from Alaska to Colorado and Arkansas, the debate over the nation?s fire-fighting preparedness?is also heating up.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "off"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

The air tanker fleet tasked with the most dangerous mega-fire tasks ? think dropping tons of fire-retardant into remote and steep canyons?? is under?particular scrutiny. Pointing to the fleet?s decade-long decline?from some 44 tankers in 2002 to nine at the start of the 2012 fire season, one critic is calling the current situation an ?air tanker crisis.?

However Tom Tidwell, chief of the US Forest Service, one of four federal agencies charged with tackling fires and the one responsible for deploying the air tankers anywhere in the country, maintains that the state of preparedness is good, because the air tankers are only part of the overall mix of fire-fighting resources.

Mr. Tidwell points to some 300 helicopters and small planes that are also used, noting that?in the past decade, the mix?has shifted, with more?emphasis on the smaller craft. As a former firefighter, Tidwell says, ?the personnel on the ground really appreciate the helicopters because they can go places the large planes cannot.?

Nonetheless, he notes that?over the weekend, the?service sealed a deal with the US military to?deliver four tankers when needed. In addition, the Forest Service has assembled?eight other plane contracts, including several with the?Canadian government to bring the available tankers for this season to 21. Beyond that,?he points to additional?resources that have just been announced ? a contract for seven total?next-generation air tankers, three?to be delivered?by the?end of this year.

But those numbers don?t tell the whole story ? and they are too little, too late, says former wildland firefighter Bill Gabbert, founder of WildfireToday.com, a fire news blog. He points to numerous fatal crashes, two this year, attributable?in part?to aircraft age and metal fatigue.

?Eight of the nine planes in the core fleet today date back to the Korean War?era,? he points out, adding,??We are in a crisis.?

Tidwell suggests there is too much emphasis on the role of the air tanker in fire suppression, adding, ?there is this perception that tankers put out fires. But they don?t. Firefighters put out fires.?

'Trust' hormone oxytocin found at heart of rare genetic disorder

Monday, June 25, 2012

The hormone oxytocin - often referred to as the "trust" hormone or "love hormone" for its role in stimulating emotional responses - plays an important role in Williams syndrome (WS), according to a study published June 12, 2012, in PLoS One.

The study, a collaboration between scientists at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies and the University of Utah, found that people with WS flushed with the hormones oxytocin and arginine vasopressin (AVP) when exposed to emotional triggers.

The findings may help in understanding human emotional and behavioral systems and lead to new treatments for devastating illnesses such as WS, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety and possibly even autism.

"Williams syndrome results from a very clear genetic deletion, allowing us to explore the genetic and neuronal basis of social behavior," says Ursula Bellugi, the director of Salk's Laboratory for Cognitive Neuroscience and a co-author on the paper. "This study provides us with crucial information about genes and brain regions involved in the control of oxytocin and vasopressin, hormones that may play important roles in other disorders."

WS arises from a faulty recombination event during the development of sperm or egg cells. As a result, virtually everyone with WS has exactly the same set of genes missing (25 to 28 genes are missing from one of two copies of chromosome 7). There also are rare cases of individuals who retain one or more genes that most people with the disorder have lost.

To children with WS, people are much more comprehensible than inanimate objects. Despite myriad health problems they are extremely gregarious, irresistibly drawn to strangers, and insist on making eye contact. They have an affinity for music. But they also experience heightened anxiety, have an average IQ of 60, experience severe spatial-visual problems, and suffer from cardiovascular and other health issues. Despite their desire to befriend people, they have difficulty creating and maintaining social relationships, something that is not at all understood but can afflict many people without WS.

In the new study, led by Dr. Julie R. Korenberg, a University of Utah professor and Salk adjunct professor, the scientists conducted a trial with 21 participants, 13 who have WS and a control group of eight people without the disorder. The participants were evaluated at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. Because music is a known strong emotional stimulus, the researchers asked participants to listen to music.

Before the music was played, the participants' blood was drawn to determine a baseline level for oxytocin, and those with WS had three times as much of the hormone as those without the syndrome. Blood also was drawn at regular intervals while the music played and was analyzed afterward to check for real-time, rapid changes in the levels of oxytocin and AVP. Other studies have examined how oxytocin affects emotion when artificially introduced into people, such as through nasal sprays, but this is one of the first significant studies to measure naturally occurring changes in oxytocin levels in rapid, real time as people undergo an emotional response.

There was little outward response to the music, but when the blood samples were analyzed, the researchers were happily surprised. The analyses showed that the oxytocin levels, and to a lesser degree AVP, had not only increased but begun to bounce among WS participants while among those without WS, both the oxytocin and AVP levels remained largely unchanged as they listened to music.

Korenberg believes the blood analyses strongly indicate that oxytocin and AVP are not regulated correctly in people with WS, and that the behavioral characteristics unique to people with WS are related to this problem.

"This shows that oxytocin quite likely is very involved in emotional response," Korenberg says.

To ensure accuracy of results, those taking the test also were asked to place their hands in 60-degree Fahrenheit water to test for negative stress, and the same results were produced as when they listened to music. Those with WS experienced an increase in oxytocin and AVP, while those without the syndrome did not.

In addition to listening to music, study participants already had taken three social behavior tests that evaluate willingness to approach and speak to strangers, emotional states, and various areas of adaptive and problem behavior. Those test results suggest that increased levels of oxytocin are linked to both increased desire to seek social interaction and decreased ability to process social cues, a double-edged message that may be very useful at times, for example, during courtship, but damaging at others, as in WS.

"The association between abnormal levels of oxytocin and AVP and altered social behaviors found in people with Williams Syndrome points to surprising, entirely unsuspected deleted genes involved in regulation of these hormones and human sociability," Korenberg said. "It also suggests that the simple characterization of oxytocin as 'the love hormone' may be an overreach. The data paint a far more complicated picture."

In particular, the study results indicate that the missing genes affect the release of oxytocin and AVP through the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland. About the size of a pearl, the hypothalamus is located just above the brain stem and produces hormones that control body temperature, hunger, mood, sex drive, sleep, hunger and thirst, and the release of hormones from many glands, including the pituitary. The pituitary gland, about the size of a pea, controls many other glands responsible for hormone secretion.

Overall, the researchers say, their findings paint a very hopeful picture, and the study holds promise for speeding progress in treating WS, and perhaps Autism and anxiety through regulation of these key players in human brain and emotion, oxytocin and vasopressin.

Dismay in S. America as Paraguay leader ousted

Paraguay's new president said on Saturday he would ask his impeached predecessor to help quell regional tensions after Argentina withdrew its ambassador in protest at what it said was a coup and Brazil recalled its top diplomat.

South American neighbors and key trading partners are taking Paraguay to task for the unprecedented speed with which the opposition-dominated Congress removed President Fernando Lugo on Friday, saying he had failed to fulfill his duties to maintain social harmony.

A silver-haired leftist and former Roman Catholic bishop, Lugo was a year away from completing his five-year term. He decried the two-day impeachment trial but accepted the decision, stepped down and told supporters any protests should be peaceful.

Lugo spoke to reporters outside his home on Saturday night, saying he was toppled by a "a congressional coup" and that Paraguay was now facing isolation.

The new president, Federico Franco, said he planned to speak to Lugo to try to help ease tensions with neighboring countries. "I think he is the key to decompressing (the situation)."

Franco had been Lugo's vice president but they often clashed and Franco's Liberal Party withdrew its support for Lugo last week, paving the way for the swift impeachment trial.

"I'm going to speak with him myself," Franco, a 49-year-old doctor, said in an interview with Reuters on Saturday. He was sworn in on Friday shortly after Lugo was ousted.

The impeachment was sparked by clashes that killed 17 police and peasant farmers during a recent land eviction. Critics of the process complained Lugo's lawyers had only a few hours to defend him in the Senate, which voted 39-4 in favor of his removal.

A landlocked, soy-exporting country of 6 million people, Paraguay has a long history of instability and military rule.

Argentina ordered the immediate withdrawal of its ambassador from Paraguay on Saturday due to "rupture of the democratic order."

Argentine President Cristina Fernandez has called the move a coup and warned that South American trade bloc Mercosur could take measures against Paraguay. In theory, that could include suspension from the group, which also brings together Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay.

Brazil on Saturday called its ambassador in Paraguay home for consultations. It "condemned" Lugo's removal because he was not able to defend himself properly, "compromising a fundamental pillar of democracy."

Brazil is Paraguay's top trading partner and Latin America's biggest economy. Its stance will likely carry the most weight but it says it will seek consensus within the UNASUR group of South American nations rather than act unilaterally.

Wave of criticism
Latin America's more radical left-wing governments have led the protests with Venezuela, Bolivia, Ecuador, Cuba, Nicaragua and Argentina saying they would not recognize the new government and vowing to lobby for sanctions against it.

Peru and Mexico also questioned the speed of the process to remove Lugo from office, although Mexico recognized the legality of the impeachment.

Despite the wave of international criticism, Paraguay's capital Asuncion felt oddly normal on Saturday with businesses open as usual and few police officers patrolling the streets a day after they clashed briefly with protesters outside Congress.

Franco said he would work to convince Argentina to reinstate its ambassador and would explain to other governments in the region that the impeachment was legal.

"(Lugo) recognized he faced a tribunal, he recognized the tribunal's verdict and finally he agreed to step down. Even more importantly, he asked for people to remain peaceful so no more blood would be shed," Franco said. "At no time was there a rupture or a coup, there was simply a change of leadership in line with the constitution and the country's laws."

Paraguay is one of the poorest countries in South America and Lugo, now 61, vowed to improve the quality of life of low-income families when his election ended six decades of rule by the Colorado party. But he struggled to push reforms, including land redistribution to poor peasant farmers, through Congress.

A cancer scare and several paternity scandals dating back to his time as a bishop added to his difficulties.

While many Latin American countries are unhappy with the lightning-fast impeachment, analysts say they are unlikely to force the issue if Lugo himself doesn't fight to be restored.

"Neighboring countries can refuse to recognize the new government, complicate negotiations or end cooperation. But I don't think they will fight for this very hard," said Milda Rivarola, a Paraguayan historian and political analyst.

'Anger' actress: I don't think about Sheen's past

FX

Daniela Bobadilla as Sam Goodson in "Anger Management."

By Cody Delistraty

Charlie Sheen doesn't exactly have the reputation as an actor who's easy to work with. Given his recent history of badmouthing just about everyone related to his former sitcom "Two and a Half Men," it's fair to wonder how the self-proclaimed "rock star from Mars" so quickly rounded up a cast for his ?comeback? show,? ?Anger Management.? Sure, the money and (dubious) notoriety that come with working alongside Sheen certainly help, but some close to him?have chosen to insulate themselves from the harsh realities of Sheen?s not-so-distant past.

?Honestly, I?d heard a little bit of what had happened during that big whole rant, but I?m not big on, like, TMZ or anything, so I didn?t read too much into it,? said Daniela Bobadilla, who plays Sheen?s 15-year-old daughter, Sam Goodson. ?As a person, he?s just the most caring, and he?s extremely grateful for anyone and anything around him.?

Though you may not recognize her name, Bobadilla isn?t exactly a newcomer to the small screen. She played Emma on NBC?s just-canceled ?Awake,? and guest starred on ?Desperate Housewives? this year before the series ended.

The doe-eyed 19-year-old?s character has her work cut out for her on ?Anger Management.? ?High-schooler Sam has the task of keeping her anger-prone, superficial father (Sheen) on the straight and narrow. While Bobadilla hasn?t a qualm in the world about working with the infamous actor, ignoring his past requires some clever phrasing and unique thinking.

Asked whether Sheen?s past behavior taints the show, Bobadilla demurred, then responded, ?Depends what you focus on."

But for her it?s not Sheen?s past but his imminent retirement that?s most upsetting. ?Charlie?s just so good I got really sad when he told me that (he?s retiring after ?Anger Management?). I asked him one day on set, ?Are you sure?? He?s like, ?Yeah. You can watch my earlier stuff. I?ve done it for a while.? So many people love him. I mean, I?m going to be sad. Really sad.?

Perhaps this sadness stems from an apparently reinvented Sheen who has crafted a kinder image of himself during this final, redemptive hurrah, showing a sweet disposition toward Bobadilla ever since her first audition for the show.

After the audition, ?Charlie started singing one of the songs that I had done in a musical theater production, and it totally freaked me out,? Bobadilla recounted. ?I was like, ?Uh ...,? and he?s like, ?Yup, I YouTubed you!? ?

Run a YouTube search for Sheen, however, and it?s clear that he doesn?t lead as bright and smiley of a life as his co-star. It's difficult to see the Sheen that Bobadilla so fondly describes. His frustration with ?Two and a Half Men? still lingers, and he maintains a bitterness toward the TV industry that was made evident in his recent interview with The New York Times.

?I watch those yahoos (at "Two and a Half Men") struggle over garbage, and it was still garbage and insisting that they?d done their best, and they hadn?t," he fumed to the paper. "They got lazy. And they got other shows going and abandoned us. Whatever.?

While Sheen works his way through his multitude of recent missteps and the relationships they've destroyed, in Bobadilla's glimmering eyes, the sun is brightly shining and everything is swell for her co-star and "Anger Management."

"I have to see him as the person he hopefully is," she said. "He?s back, he?s OK, he?s trying to make things right!?

Whether it's true is beside the point.

"Anger Management" premieres June 28 at 9 p.m. on FX.

JoCoSAR Blog: Amateur radio operators practice communications ...

Images-1Hams radio operators across the nation volunteer their skills to emergency communications organizations. ?We are lucky to have an excellent group in our area, Josephine County Emergency Communications (JCEC). ?Here?and here is a bit more about them and more about amateur radio here. Becoming a ham radio operator is not difficult and is a terrific complimentary skill for search and rescue team members because hams have access to repeaters and more frequencies?very good things to have when line of sight radio transmission (state SAR) and cellphones aren't working for you.?

source

Images-1SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- When disaster strikes, communication often breaks down.? Without cell phones and the internet, most of us would be lost.?

But a fraction of the population has backup communication.? Amateur radio has proven not only an interesting hobby, but an invaluable resource after disasters like the Joplin tornado.

They use their voices, their keyboards, and even morse code, but it all goes through the radio waves.

"It's fascinating.? And if you ever get bored of one part of amateur radio, there's always something else to do in it," says amateur radio operator Don Rogers.

It's a lifelong hobby, and a chance to talk with people around the world.? "Southeast Asia, Australia, Russia, talk to Cuba a lot for some reason," Rogers says.

Running on solar and battery power, Springfield Ham radio operators set up at the American Red Cross on Saturday to share their knowledge.? "It's exciting, the growth.? Right now, there's over 750,000 amateur radio operators in the U.S. alone, and that number is growing," says Patti Flowers-Palmer of the Southwest Missouri Amateur Radio Club.

They're inviting anyone to come out and try amateur radio.? "We contest with it, we play games with it, in essence, on the air," says Flowers-Palmer.

The event also serves as a preparedness drill.? "More importantly, where the community is concerned, we can be there in case of a disaster to set up and provide communications when regular communications are down," says Flowers-Palmer.

Ham radio operators like Flowers-Palmer replaced phone and internet communications in the hours after the Joplin tornado.? "There was no communication but amateur radio at that time," says Flowers-Palmer.

She set up just outside the emergency room at Cox South Hospital.? "I was handing the mic to them so they could talk to Freeman and tell them what they needed.? It was kind of scary," says Flowers-Palmer.

Other Ham operators provided communication from Joplin to Mercy and Ozarks Community Hospitals.? They even canvassed the path of destruction.? "They actually had people on foot with radios that were helping the search and rescue teams to maintain their communications," says Flowers-Palmer.

Now, they prepare for the next time they're needed.? "When all else fails, there's amateur radio," says Rogers.

Amateur radio operators set up all over the Ozarks this weekend- Joplin, Nixa, Lebanon and the Lake of the Ozarks, to name a few.? Those participating in this annual "field day" will be open to the public until noon Sunday, June 24th.? The location in Springfield is at West Bypass and Division behind the American Red Cross.
