Ask Engadget: should companies include a cable with a new product?

Ask Engadget

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget inquiry is from David, who wants to know if you'd prefer a free cable or a cheaper device when you buy pro audio gear. If you're looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

Many thanks!"

a) Include a cheap cable and let people who care buy a high quality one?
b) Include a reasonable quality cable but increase the price?
c) Include no cable and make it clear they need to buy one?

"I work for a small audio-tech company and we're currently getting close to releasing our first retail product, which does surround sound from stereo inputs -- kinda like Dolby Pro Logic, except good. Internally, we're agonizing over if we should include a stereo RCA cable. Of course, users will need to integrate an additional cable into their setup, but plenty of people will have spares lying around at home. Do you think it's better to:

What a question! We're decidedly of two minds, since given a bit of haggling, most retailers will chuck in a branded lead, but we'd hate to get our shiny new gear home to find it's missing a key component the one time they don't. Our dithering aside, it's time to turn the question over to our faithful Engadgeteers with this chance to shape the future of the high-end audio business for the better... we'd better not disappoint the man!

Another big Supreme Court term kicks off Monday

(AP) ? When last we saw the chief justice of the United States on the bench, John Roberts was joining with the Supreme Court's liberals in an unlikely lineup that upheld President Barack Obama's health care overhaul.

Progressives applauded Roberts' statesmanship. Conservatives uttered cries of betrayal.

Now, the Supreme Court is embarking on a new term beginning Monday that could be as consequential as the last one, with the prospect for major rulings about affirmative action, gay marriage and voting rights.

Many people on both the left and right expect Roberts to return to the fold and side with the conservative justices in the new term's big cases. If they're right, the spotlight will be back on Justice Anthony Kennedy, whose vote typically is decisive in cases that otherwise split the court's liberals and conservatives.

But Roberts will be watched closely, following his health care vote, for fresh signs that he's becoming less ideologically predictable.

It may be that the dramatic health care decision presages "some shift in his tenure as chief justice," said Steve Shapiro, the American Civil Liberties Union's national legal director. "Or does it give him cover to continue to pursue a conservative agenda?"

The first piece of evidence could be in the court's consideration of the University of Texas' already limited use of race to help fill its incoming freshman classes, which comes before the court Oct. 10. The outcome could further limit or even end the use of racial preferences in college admissions.

Roberts has expressed contempt for the use of race in drawing legislative districts, calling it "a sordid business, this divvying us up by race," and in assigning students to public schools, saying that "the way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race."

The written arguments submitted by both sides in the Texas case leave little doubt that Kennedy, not Roberts, holds the prized vote. The challengers of the Texas program and the university itself cite Kennedy's prior writings on affirmative action a combined 50 times.

The court also is expected to confront gay marriage in some form. Several cases seek to guarantee federal benefits for legally married same-sex couples. A provision of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act deprives same-sex couples of a range of federal benefits available to heterosexual couples.

Several federal courts have agreed that the provision of the law is unconstitutional, a situation that practically ensures that the high court will step in.

A separate appeal asks the justices to sustain California's Proposition 8, the amendment to the state constitution that outlawed gay marriage in the nation's largest state. Federal courts in California have struck down the amendment.

Once again, many legal analysts expect Roberts essentially to be against gay marriage. "The outcome clearly turns on how Anthony Kennedy votes," said Georgetown University law professor Michael Seidman.

The justices may not even consider whether to hear the gay marriage issue until November.

Another hot topic with appeals pending before the high court, and more soon to follow, is the future of a cornerstone law of the civil rights movement.

In 2006, Congress overwhelmingly approved, and President George W. Bush signed, legislation extending for 25 more years a critical piece of the Voting Rights Act. It requires states and local governments with a history of racial and ethnic discrimination, mainly in the South, to get advance approval either from the Justice Department or the federal court in Washington before making any changes that affect elections.

The requirement currently applies to the states of Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas and Virginia. It also covers certain counties in California, Florida, New York, North Carolina and South Dakota, and some local jurisdictions in Michigan and New Hampshire. Coverage has been triggered by past discrimination not only against blacks, but also against American Indians, Asian-Americans, Alaskan Natives and Hispanics.

The court spoke skeptically about the provision in a 2009 decision, but left it mostly unchanged. Now, however, cases from Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina and Texas could prompt the court to deal head on with the issue of advance approval. The South Carolina and Texas cases involve voter identification laws; a similar Indiana law was previously upheld by the court.

It is unclear when the justices will decide whether to hear arguments in those cases. Arguments themselves would not take place until next year.

Yet there still is a chance that the court could become enmeshed in election disputes, even before the ballots are counted. Suits in Ohio over early voting and provisional ballots appear the most likely to find their way to the justices before the Nov. 6 election, said Richard Hasen, an election law expert at the University of California at Irvine law school.

Among other important cases already on the court's docket:

? A high-stakes dispute, to be argued first thing Monday, between the business community and human rights advocates over the reach of a 1789 law. The issue is whether businesses can be sued in U.S. courts for human rights violations that take place on foreign soil and have foreign victims.

? A challenge to the use of drug-sniffing dogs in two situations. Florida police used a marijuana-sniffing dog's alert at the door of a private home to obtain a search warrant to look inside the house. The question is whether the dog's sniff itself was a search. A separate case looks at the reliability of animals trained to pick up the scent of illegal drugs.

? A challenge to the detention of a man who police picked up a mile away from an apartment they had a warrant to search. Occupants of a home may be detained during the search for the safety of officers, but this case tests how far that authority extends away from the place to be searched.

? Environmental disputes involving runoff from logging roads in Oregon and water pollution in Los Angeles.

Paul Clement, the Republican lawyer who lost the health care case and could be before the justices on gay marriage and voting rights, said last term punctured the notion that in close cases, the court goes where Kennedy wants.

"We've all been reminded that's not always the case," he said.

The idea that could be tested this term is whether Roberts' concern for the court as an institution that is apart from politics will influence his votes, or at least his reasoning, in the year's biggest cases.

Interviews in a public place

What are your thoughts on organisations that want to conduct interviews in a public place?

I ask because I find it a bit weird and inappropriate, and wanted to know if it was just me that feels this way. Whenever organisations ask me to meet them in a place that isn't where they do business, I automatically think "What is it that they don't want me to see?" When the venue they choose is also open to the public, such as a coffee shop or fast food outlet, I additionally think that they haven't given much thought to the necessary privacy of the process. A noisy Starbucks in front of an audience of schoolkids and mums with pushchairs isn't the place to grill me on my private career history and salary expectations, and I'd hope isn't the place that any credible organisation would choose to discuss their confidential skills gap and business challenges.

I stress that I'm not talking here about interviews where distance is an issue, and each party is having to travel to meet the other in some best compromise location that's equidistant from each. I'm talking about situations where their place of business is in the locale where the meeting is taking place, they just decide not to meet in their own offices.

I've given this approach a whirl on a previous occasion, and tbh based on that experience it's a big red flag for me. Even where space is at a premium (which is in itself a red flag, but might be manageable with the right handling), I can't see any excuse for choosing McDonalds over a video call conducted via Skype. If you can get yourself to a room that's comfortable for one person and that has internet access, you should be able to facilitate that. If you can't even find a room for one person with basic facilities such as the internet, then how can you ever hope to run a successful business?

Colleges try new fixes to recurring remedial rut

WEST PLAINS, Mo. (AP) ? After leaving high school as a teen mother, Ashley McCullough is back on track to receive a two-year degree and work as a respiratory therapist. But she first had to conquer a remedial math class and its core lessons on addition, subtraction, multiplication and division ? the same basic skills her now 6-year-old daughter will soon start to learn in elementary school.

"I didn't have my act together," the 23-year-old said. "I had a baby at 16."

McCullough is far from alone at Missouri State University-West Plains, a two-year school nestled in the southern Missouri Ozarks near the Arkansas border where roughly three out of every four students take at least one remedial class.

That's well above the national estimates of remedial participation rates of 20 percent to 30 percent at four-year schools and more than 50 percent at community colleges. And like their counterparts at public flagship universities, rural teacher colleges and urban commuter campuses, many of McCullough's classmates will drop out before advancing to the next course, let alone graduate or move on to a four-year school.

It's forcing those on the front lines to try dramatically different approaches, from tweaking the standards that determine who needs extra help to allowing remedial students to simultaneously take the introductory classes they were once barred from.

The changes come as impatient lawmakers in states such as Connecticut, Kansas, Ohio and Tennessee are restricting or eliminating remedial classes at public colleges, or even threatening to withhold money from schools that don't do a better job of preparing unprepared students for the rigors of college. In Washington, President Barack Obama has challenged two-year and four-year schools to improve workforce training and college completion rates.

"When you have 35 percent of students passing your course, that is not acceptable," said Missouri State math specialist Thora Broyles. "Something had to be done."

At West Plains, the first step was hiring an administrator to focus solely on what practitioners prefer to call developmental education, rather than assign the task to a disinterested or overburdened faculty member.

The nomenclature is more than symbolic, said Mirra Anson, who was hired as the school's "dev ed" director thanks to a five-year federal grant.

"With remedial education, the connotation is we are making up for things they didn't learn in high school," she said. "But with dev ed, we are developing the skills they need to have to be successful. There's a different connotation there. There's no need to remediate what they didn't have in high school, because that part of their life is over. So let's move forward now and talk about what you need."

That means no more lectures for Broyles' remedial math students, who instead work on self-paced lessons in computer labs. Rather than lecture, Broyles instead works individually with students, aided by two tutors culled from the ranks of advanced students. The approach, developed at Virginia Tech Univeristy, is known as the "Emporium" model. Some students complete the two remedial classes and a required college algebra class in one semester; others take weeks before even moving past simple equations.

"I like the fact they give you the option to work at your own pace," said McCullough, who completed high school in a home-based program after her daughter's birth and now has another child who soon turns 2. "I probably wasn't on the same level that everybody else was (who had enrolled) right out of high school."

New West Plains students struggling with basic grammar, punctuation and argumentative writing now take the same freshman composition course as their more advanced peers, but separate into smaller groups ? with the same professor ? for a pass-fail developmental English class that builds on the work covered in the more advanced writing class. The "accelerated learning program" is modeled on a similar effort at the Community College of Baltimore County in Maryland.

Sydney Wilson, an aspiring teacher from Houston, Mo., expects to receive her associate degree in the spring and a four-year diploma from the school in 2014 after successfully completing the accelerated English course.

The teacher "could take everything we were writing about in the first English class, and in the second class, we'd just write about it in more detail," Wilson said. "So I wasn't writing two separate papers for each class, it was just tied together as one."

Like most schools, West Plains uses student scores on the ACT or other standardized college entrance exams to determine who needs additional help. That approach has come under fire from some reformers who question whether other measures, such as high school grade-point average or course evaluation, are predictors that are more accurate. Two recent studies by the Community College Research Center at Columbia University's Teachers College found that up to one-third of new students in the examined school systems were improperly placed in remedial classes.

And a scathing report released in May by the Washington-based nonprofit Complete College America called remediation "higher education's bridge to nowhere," traveled by nearly 1.7 million U.S. college students, with almost four in 10 community college remedial students not completing those courses and just one in 10 graduating from those schools.

The challenges of remedial education, though, transcend curriculum, said Rebecca Goosen, dean of college preparatory at San Jacinto College in Texas and president of the National Association of Developmental Education.

For many, life challenges become all consuming, she said, from the single mother losing a reliable babysitter to the teenager who can't afford to fix a broken-down car.

"People are trying to find the silver bullet," Goosen said. "It's a very complex issue...We are not going to fix, in a 16-week period, what's been broken for years."

In West Plains, college students also struggle to excel in a region marked by high poverty and unemployment, low cultural expectations and public schools where the quality of education varies widely, numerous students, teachers and school Chancellor Drew Bennett said in interviews.

For Bennett, that means offering students what he calls the "Missouri State-West Plains Promise," a one-time guarantee that allows students who receive a "D'' or "F'' grade that causes their grade-point average to sink below 2.0 to retake the same class the next semester at no cost ? provided the students have no more than two class absences, submit assignments on time, and seek outside help from teachers, advisors and tutors.

Bennett, an ex-Marine and National War College professor, reinforces that message and other important university missives by reaching students where they congregrate, which includes reminders and motivational tips posted in a weekly restroom newsletter known as the "Stall Study."

Yet for all of the schools' efforts ? its innovations have attracted acclaim from the Aspen Institute as one of the country's top 30 community colleges ? the hurdles its student face outside the classroom can appear insurmountable.

Single mother Kristi Hargrove, 39, returned to campus in 2009 after dropping out following just one semester nine years earlier: "I was too young to know any better and too young to care," she said.

Placed into remedial math, she struggled to keep up. But a series of personal upheavals ? from her brother's death to a broken engagement ? culminated with Hargrove again dropping out earlier this year, 20 credits shy of her associate degree in nursing.

"The pressure just kicked in, and I had to quit school," she said. "I call the Ozarks 'quicksand.' Once you're here, you're here (for good), and can't make enough money to get out."

Elizabeth Kusel, 42, returned to school at West Plains after first enrolling at a two-year school near her southern Oregon home more than a decade ago. A single mother, she lived in a women's domestic violence shelter with her two sons, ages 8 and 9, after her divorce and is now an honors student with hopes of attending the University of Virginia and law school at Stanford.

She too had to survive Math 20, the remedial class that defeated too many of her fellow freshmen. Kusel sympathizes with those who don't make it.

"There have been a lot of days I ask, 'Why am I doing this?'" she said. "It would be so much easier to go get a dead-end job and pay everything off and not go through this."

Catalysis: Optimizing water splitting

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? Computer simulations of a metal-sulfide alloy unlock the secrets to designing solar-powered catalysts that generate hydrogen fuel from water.

Partnerships can pay off when it comes to converting solar into chemical energy. By modeling a cadmium sulfide (CdS)-zinc sulfide (ZnS) alloy with special computational techniques, a Singapore-based research team has identified the key photocatalytic properties that enable this chemical duo to 'split' water molecules into a fuel, hydrogen gas (H2). The theoretical study was published by Jianwei Zheng from the A*STAR Institute of High Performance Computing and his co-workers.

Chemists had already identified CdS and ZnS semiconductors as promising photocatalysts for water splitting. However, both came with a drawback related to the size of their so-called 'band gap' -- the energy difference between occupied and unoccupied electronic states that determine photo-activity. While CdS can readily harvest solar energy because of its small band gap, it needs a metal co-catalyst to produce H2. On the other hand, ZnS requires high-energy ultraviolet light to initiate water splitting owing to its large band gap.

Recently chemists had overcome these problems by alloying CdS and ZnS together into a 'solid solution': a physical state where Zn ions are distributed homogenously inside the crystal lattice of CdS. Altering the proportion of ZnS in these alloys enables production of photocatalysts with tunable responses to visible light and high H2 evolution rates in water. Improving the design of a Cd-ZnS solid solution is difficult, because its underlying mechanism is poorly understood.

As a workaround, Zheng and his co-workers used a technique known as 'special quasi-random structures' (SQS) to mimic a completely random alloy with a series of small, periodic models. After carefully working to correlate experimental random hexagonal crystals with their SQS approximations, they calculated the electronic properties of the Cd-ZnS solid solution using hybrid density functional theory -- a computational method that gives accurate descriptions of band gaps.

When the researchers gradually increased the Zn content of their model alloy, they saw that the band gap deviated from a linear combination of the two components. This effect, known as band 'bowing', arises from volume deformations within the Cd-ZnS solid solution and is an essential parameter for predicting catalytic solar H2 production.

Further calculations revealed that the alloy's high catalytic activity stemmed from obvious elevation of the position of unoccupied electronic states, and a subtle change in the position of occupied electronic states, as the amount of Zn increased. But to retain strong light harvesting capabilities and to avoid premature corrosion, the team proposes an equal ratio of ZnS to CdS for optimal photocatalytic water splitting.

Cabinet Depth Refrigerators For Utility | Home improvement ...

If you ask anyone who is proud of the house they will usually tell you that one of the most important things is to be proud of is the kitchen, because the kitchen is the most important room in the house as far as they are concerned. The problem when it comes to designing the kitchen is that kitchen appliances can sometimes be strange shapes, which means they do not always fit in very easily with the overall kitchen design. The refrigerator is one of the biggest kitchen appliances there is, and it is an important one, and due to the fact that it really needs to fit in with the kitchen design many people are now opting for cabinet depth refrigerators in order to make sure the kitchen looks as good as it possibly can do. This article will take a look at some of the various types of cabinet depth refrigerator and what to do when choosing a cabinet depth fridge for a certain type of kitchen.

If you are looking for a small cabinet depth refrigerator one of the best things you can do is to go online and check out the various models that are available, because there are now so many different types you are almost certain to find one that will fit in with your kitchen style. Compact cabinet depth refrigerators can be found in many different colors and designs, and if you spend some time doing some research you?re almost certain to find one which will fit in so well beneath your present kitchen cabinets that you will hardly notice the fridge is there at all.

Of course, it is not only a case of finding a cabinet depth fridge which fits in with the cabinets and makes the kitchen look good, because there is also the important factor of the utility of the fridge to bear in mind. If you are looking for something that has a lot of storage capacity, you need to make sure you have plenty of refrigerator shelves. There are now many different types of three and four shelf cabinet depth refrigerator models which will enable you to store food easily. It is usually a good idea to look at refrigerators with adjustable shelves, as this makes the storage far more useful. There is also the question of a temperature gauge, or even better a digital temperature monitor, to make sure that the temperature of the refrigerator stays within the normal level.

In terms of brands of cabinet depth fridges, you could look at GE cabinet depth refrigerators, as the supplier has quite a few models on the market and you are sure to find one to suit your needs. However, Whirlpool cabinet depth refrigerators are also a popular choice, since there are quite a few large cabinet depth refrigerator models from this company, which can give a refrigeration capacity of up to 20 cu ft or more. If you are looking for a wide cabinet depth refrigerator make sure you look at two door counter depth refrigerator models, because these will enable you to get into the refrigerator much more easy.

There is a good choice of different models which, as well as having adjustable shelves, also have various refrigeration compartments for different foodstuffs. For many people it can be absolutely essential that there is a vegetable compartment, and also a vegetable crisper, which can be essential for some types of vegetables and fruits in order to keep the food in the right state. Something to bear in mind is also whether you want the cabinet depth fridge to be portable, and if this is the case you need to look at the model that has castors rather than feet.

There is also the consideration of whether or not you want a separate ice making compartment, something which is important if you want to have cold drinks. A wine chiller as part of the cabinet depth fridge could also be a consideration worth bearing in mind, as could be a compartment to keep beer cold. There are many types of small width refrigerators nowadays, including compact cabinet depth models which are made for a small kitchen. A cabinet depth refrigerator suitable for a small kitchen is something that is really worth looking into because it can make for far more space within the kitchen itself, something which is important if you do not have the space for a tall refrigerator.

Think as well about the type of doors you want on the cabinet depth refrigerator, because some people prefer French door models, while others prefer sliding door cabinet depth refrigerators, since these allow for easy access and also mean that you do not have to use up too much space. Take time to look at the various models that are available and make sure you also look at the various functions of the refrigerator before making your final purchase decision.

Running back Darren McFadden is probable after being slowed by a shoulder injury this week and wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey, while eager to get back on the field, is doubtful thanks to the blow to the head and neck he took in last week?s win against the Steelers. The Broncos are fairly healthy with the exception of safety Quinton Carter, who is out, and guard Chris Kuper, listed as doubtful.

Chargers at Chiefs

Chargers cornerback Shareece Wright is out again this week while tackle Jared Gaither has climbed the ladder to questionable while dealing with his ever-present back injury. Kicker Nate Kaeding is also listed as questionable, but he?s not going to Kansas City and Nick Novak will kick. The Chiefs offense could be in a tough way. Tight end Kevin Boss is out, running back Peyton Hillis is doubtful and three wideouts ? Dwayne Bowe, Steve Breaston and Dexter McCluster ? are all questionable.

49ers at Jets

The 49ers continue to list running back Brandon Jacobs and wide receiver Ted Ginn as questionable, just as they have before they?ve missed the team?s other games this season. Cornerback Darrelle Revis is out (and will be until his triumphant return for the Super Bowl) and wide receiver Stephen Hill is listed as doubtful, although you can go ahead and downgrade him based on Rex Ryan?s assessment of his chances of playing. Tight end Dustin Keller and linebacker Bryan Thomas, who have each missed the last two games, are questionable.

Seahawks at Rams

Seattle listed guard John Moffitt as doubtful and linebacker LeRoy Hill is questionable. The Rams will have another game-time decision with running back Steven Jackson and rookie defensive tackle Michael Brockers could make his regular season debut after missing the first three games with an ankle injury.

Titans at Texans

Tennessee wide receiver Kenny Britt and tight end Jared Cook are both questionable, although Cook was the only one to practice at all this week. The Texans listed wide receiver Lestar Jean as out and they have a slew of players, including quarterback Matt Schaub and running back Arian Foster, as probable.

Redskins at Buccaneers

Cornerback Cedric Griffin is out for the Redskins while wide receiver Pierre Gar?on and tackle Trent Williams have both been listed as questionable. The Buccaneers will be without cornerback Anthony Gaitor, but are otherwise injury free.

The 18 Commandments of Avoiding Spam Filters? | Business 2 ...

Easy Email Marketing Tips

how to avoid getting trapped by a spam filterTurns out, all those invitations to help a Nigerian Prince transfer some cash are no joke. As of August 2012, fighting email spam cost American consumers and corporations about $20 billion annually.?Filters on major email platforms are continually becoming more effective at keeping every unsolicited offer for diet pills out of our personal inboxes. In fact, they?re so effective that marketing messages your contacts might not end up in the inbox if they include the word ?free!? Every small business owner and inbound marketer needs to know at least the basics of how to avoid getting caught by a spam filter:

1.?Don?t Buy Email Lists

While purchasing lists of names and emails who?ve agreed to receive commercial offers isn?t technically illegal, it?s not an especially prudent move. Since the senders never really opted into your communications, your open rate, click-throughs and sender score are likely to plummet.

2.?DON?T WRITE LIKE THIS!!!!!

Being aggressive is much more likely to annoy your contacts than increase your open rate. Not only are aggressive tactics contrary to a smart inbound marketing strategy, spam filters don?t like them, either.

3.?Don?t Forget Alt Text

You should anticipate that not all of your contacts will be able to view the carefully-selected images you?re including in the emails and write thoughtful descriptions that support the overall message.

4. Do?Avoid Trigger Words

Free and it?s common variations, no obligation and guarantee can all be viewed suspiciously by spam filters, whether they?re used in the subject line of the email or in the body.

5.?Do Spell Check

Errors in your content aren?t just embarrassing and sure to be pointed out by someone on your contacts list, they?re a touchy point for many platforms. Misspellings of common words will be viewed with caution and the message might not end up in the recipients? inboxes.

6.?Don?t Utilize SEO

Yes, we?ve heard the breaking news that personal emails from your Gmail account are going to start showing up in Google search results. That doesn?t mean you should revert to keyword stuffing, using a font that matches the background or other black hat SEO practices. If the copy doesn?t make sense to a human, it could hurt your sender score.

7. Do Remove Invalid Emails

Make a point or removing all hard bounces as soon as possible, defined as attempted deliveries that have failed permanently. An abandoned or closed email account offers no contribution to your bottom line, and a high failure rate can damage your sender score.

8.?Don?t Use Attachments

Even if you?re feeling charitable enough to share your latest whitepaper or eBook with a certain segment of your email list, don?t bite. Put a prominently-placed call-to-action in your emails, and direct your contacts back to your website to take advantage of the offer.

9.?Do Offer Unsubscribes

Have some of your contacts been awfully quiet lately? Have they been ignoring your awesome invitations to sales, savings opportunities and brand-new eBooks? Offer them an opportunity to make a clean break and leave your email list. Remember, it?s always better to lose subscribers than risk being marked as spam.

10.?Don?t Forget to Confirm Opt-Ins.

The harder your subscribers have to work to receive your exclusive communications, the more likely they are to want to read your content. After you receive a new email address, ask the new subscriber to confirm their interest. Sure, it may decrease your list growth slightly, but you?re almost guaranteed to have better engagement.

11.?Just Ask to Be Added

Even if you?re far from a spammer, you could still end up in a spam folder. It?s a sad truth for email marketers that spam filters are more effective than ever. Just ask your contacts to add your email to their contacts list.

12. Don?t Make Unsubscribing Difficult

Don?t obscure the unsubscribe link or require your contacts to complete a long survey or form before removing their email addresses.

13.?Use a Real Name

Marketing people enjoy is often personal and more human than corporate. Add some personality and trust to your communications by sending under the name of a real employee, whether it?s your CEO or Graphic Designer.

14.?Don?t Be Too Long-Winded

Experts estimate that 400 words is probably ideal for email marketing communications. Keep it short and sweet enough that your call-to-action is above the fold. Besides, extensive copy can also be a trigger for spam filters.

15.?Do Experiment

Before you do a mass-mailing, send emails to common email platforms to ensure nothing is lost in translation. Email spam filters can have varying levels of sensitivity, and you may need to make some tweaks before sending to an entire segment.

16.?Do Check Your Sender Score

83% of the time an email doesn?t reach an inbox, it?s caused by a poor sender score. Learn how to interpret your score and register with ReturnPath to check it on a regular basis.

17.?Do Remove Unsubscribed Contacts

Complying with requests to unsubscribe from your communications isn?t just a smart move, it?s the law!

18.?Don?t Stop Learning!

The laws and technology surrounding email marketing are continually changing, and there?s just no excuse to stop learning how to avoid tripping spam filters or worse, breaking the law. We recommend expert blog The Email Skinny as a reputable resource for your RSS feeds.

What you Should Know Before Starting your Business Online ...

Starting your Business Online All in good time: Before you invest money in the purchase of office equipment and supplies to start your business online, from home, make sure there is a market for your product or service. There are several stories of entrepreneurs motivated to start an online business, but have a very competitive product (all offer the same product, and then the sale of one of them is difficult for others). Then, spend some time researching the products or services you would like to represent or sell. Remember that an online business will be successful whether or not someone who wants to buy what you are selling.

Dedicate space and time: The idea of working from home, ?in your bathrobe?, is what motivates many idealists to start an online business. Actually, no matter what you can use for your office, but rather, where and when. To succeed, it is important to set aside the common distractions of home, children yelling, etc. Customers do not want to know his personal life but rather want enter into a business relationship. You must show your professionalism protecting the perception the customer has of the company.

Marketing 101: Unlike the screenplay for the movie by Kevin Costner: ?If you build it, they will come?, the customers do not appear. One of the main reasons why online businesses fail is because the owner wants to sell. Before going too far, ask yourself a question: Am I ready to spend my time looking for customers? If your answer is yes, you are ready to move to the next level, otherwise, I would suggest that you review the reasons why he decided to start an Internet business. In addition to the sale, it is important that owners know other ways to sell their products or services. Take time to understand how to use online marketing tools such as social media, email and search engines like Google to help sell their products.

Prepare for the worst: Any new business or enterprise requires a great deal of optimism, but experience teaches us to be prepared in case things do not go as expected. Starting a business online is much cheaper than a traditional business, but also requires an initial investment. Be realistic about the amount of money you have to invest in your business, properly plan and control their marketing costs and thus get better results.

Expect the best: Unlike the above, it is very important to the positive energy and passion that you put into your online business. Another reason why the Internet business from home, can fail is because its founder loses strength. How many of us know someone who started their online business and stayed on the road? You should look for a product or service that you are passionate about. Keep learning new ways to sell and market your product.

Being Healthy Despite the US Health Care System - in Danbury Patch

?

Virtually every hospital has a doctor on staff that is known for practicing bad medicine but his peers don't call him on it. And the body count from medical mistakes made in American hospitals would fill four jumbo jets a week, according to an essay this weekend in the Wall Street Journal by noted surgeon Martin Makary.

Makary is on staff at Johns Hopkins Hospital and previously wrote the groundbreaking book "The Checklist Manifesto," which contained a series of simple guidelines aimed at stopping surgical mistakes and which were later adopted by the World Health Organization. His new book is "Unaccountable: What Hospitals Won't Tell You and How Transparency Can Revolutionize Health Care."

In his essay this weekend in the Journal Makary says there is a "distrubing closed door culture" in American medicine and that doctors in hospitals routinely cover up or ignore the mistakes of colleagues. As often as 40 times a week across the country a surgeon operates on the wrong body part, he writes.?

"Roughly a quarter of all hospitalized patients will be harmed by a medical error of some kind. If medical errors were a disease, they would be the sixth leading cause of death in America?just behind accidents and ahead of Alzheimer's," Makary says in his essay. "The human toll aside, medical errors cost the U.S. health-care system tens of billions a year. Some 20% to 30% of all medications, tests and procedures are unnecessary, according to research done by medical specialists, surveying their own fields. What other industry misses the mark this often?"

The solution he writes, is for health care consumers to become better at checking into the background of their doctors and for the medical community itself to hold each accountable.

In Connecticut there has a been a decline in the number of uninsured people. From 2010 to 2011 the number of people with health insurance rose from 256.6 million to 260.2 million.?

Health & Fitness: Self Improvement

Teens nowadays face a world so much smaller than what generations before them have experienced. Today, you can make a friend from halfway around the world, without even leaving your bedroom.

The culprit: teen social networking.

?How does teen social networking work, and what forms does it take?? is the question many adults nowadays ask themselves. This is due to the belief that if they know their children?s friends, then they might get an insight of what kind of persons their offspring are.

Well, in order to understand teen social networking, you need to understand that teenagers aren?t all the same. Adolescence is the stage when a person first gets an idea about social interaction; it is that stage when they discover what kind of person they are and who they will eventually become.

Teen social networking revolves around these two contradicting but very much true facts: every teen is different, some teens are the same.

This paradox, this contradiction is at the heart of teen social networking. The fact that every teen is different makes teens want to meet other people and to see if they can find someone to relate with.

The fact that some teens are the same, at least in some aspects, encourages teens to bond and form their own little core groups. This can now expand to become a network.

Teen social networking works on the premise that we are all connected. You know him and he knows her and she knows someone else? etc.

The fact that everyone is connected can fascinate people, especially teenagers. The world has certainly gotten small enough that, if you talk to the right people, you can get in touch with anyone in the world.

There is a theory that a person is connected to every other person in the world through no less than six degrees of separation. However, the emergence of technology is rapidly cutting down this ?theory?. No one would actually be surprised nowadays if he or she found out that they are connected to everyone within one degree.

What forms does teen social networking take? Well, there are, of course, the usual manifestations of little cliques or groups in school. These core groups often form a teen?s first real network. Through the years, this network often expands, ever growing stronger with each additional member.

There are also the different clubs that a teen joins. These clubs are a type of teen social networking in the sense that they let teenagers meet people with the same interests as theirs.

Lately, of course, we have seen the emergence of chat rooms and the ever-popular Friendster and MySpace. These incorporate the use of the technology of internet into interacting socially with other people.

This makes teen social networking especially interesting since they have the opportunity to meet people whose locations are very far from them. This introduces teenagers to whole new worlds where the rules and norms they are used to do not apply.

This then leads them to the belief that what they do does affect other people and that, no matter how different, people should be respected, in order for them to respect you.

As with other good things, however, too much social networking can be bad. And, as always, moderation is the key to a successful social network.

Elder Care: What Does Long Term Care Insurance Cover?

Long-term care insurance is an important aspect of future planning for many families. In fact, it is advised that individuals who believe their loved ones may need long-term care seek out a plan that fits their senior?s anticipated needs. Long-term care, including home care, is a medical necessity for which some families struggle to pay. By planning ahead and taking out a long-term care policy, you can protect your elderly loved one and the rest of your family against the financial complications that such care can create.

While long-term care is certainly recommended by elder care professionals, it is important that you and your family understand exactly what the policy will cover. Because each policy varies, it is important to speak with your senior?s insurance professional to understand precisely what expenses will be covered or reimbursed; however, here are some basic facts regarding the services that a long-term care plan may cover.

  • The purpose of long-term care policies is to cover daily needs that are not met by health insurance, including Medicare or Medicaid. For this reason, the policy is most likely to pertain to assistance with activities of daily living, including grooming, personal hygiene, dressing, eating, etc.
  • Some medical conditions, such as Alzheimer?s disease and other forms of dementia, often require the supervision of a senior care professional; however, these services are not always covered by health insurance despite the fact that they are necessitated by a medical condition. Long-term care policies frequently cover such supervision, allowing elderly individuals to continue aging in place despite Alzheimer?s disease or other illnesses.

Additionally, it is recommended that you consult with an insurance professional to determine if a long-term care policy is the right move for your family. African Union calls for "comprehensive" deal between Sudan and S. Sudan

September 23, 2012 (JUBA) The African Union Commission and the United
Nations on Saturday said both Sudan and South Sudan needed to reach a
comprehensive deal, as their leaders meet on Sunday, to resolve all
outstanding issues in post-session relation between the two.

South Sudan President, Salva Kiir and his Sudanese counterpart, Omar
al Bashir are due to meet on Sunday in the Ethiopian capital Addis
Ababa at a summit that seeks to wrap up talks on a series of
outstanding matters.

Jean Ping, the AU Commission chairperson, in a statement, encourages
both presidents to take advantage of this unique opportunity to reach
agreement on the outstanding issues in the post secession relations
between their two countries.

The AU, over the years, has maintained an intense and sustained
engagement with Sudanese stakeholders and people. In October 2009, the
Peace and Security Council (PSC) established the AU High?Level
Implementation Panel (AUHIP), chaired by former President Thabo Mbeki
and including former Presidents Abdulsalami Abubakar and Pierre
Buyoya.

?This has represented an unprecedented degree of African engagement
and assistance at the highest level,? Ping notes in the statement.

The AU, he said, has always recognized that the crisis affecting Sudan
and South Sudan is an ?African crisis?, and the continent has an
obligation to assist the two states achieve a lasting solution.

Ping, however, noted that throughout its engagement, the AU, notably
through the AUHIP, has maintained the view that solutions to the
challenges at hand lie with the Sudanese people themselves.

The AU, in the aftermath of intense border fighting between the two
countries, issues a strong communiqu? and roadmap in April, which
enabled the two parties to return to the negotiating table and
overcome the challenges facing their relationship.

?As the deadline specified by the PSC Roadmap and endorsed by United
Nations Security Council resolution 2046 (2012) approaches, the AU is
fully aware that difficult decisions must be made by both sides to
finalise negotiations on their post secession relations,? Ping?s
statement reads in part.

The AU, its commission chairperson added, calls for a strong sense of
national leadership, saying decisions made on issues of profound
significance to citizens and governments are undoubtedly difficult and
can involve ?painful? choices.

He however said the AU, recognizing the value of long?term imperative of building two viable states and maintaining the close relationships between the peoples of Sudan and South Sudan, remains confident that the leaders will ?rise to the occasion and leave a legacy of peace for generations to come.?

Meanwhile, Ban Ki-Moon, UN Secretary-General said he was encouraged by the significant narrowing of differences between the Governments of Sudan and South Sudan on a range of outstanding issues and strongly urges them to conclude a comprehensive deal during the Presidential summit in Addis Ababa on 23 September.

Ki-Moon, in a statement issued on the eve of today?s summit, also congratulated the negotiating teams of the two parties for what they have achieved so far, but urged presidents of the two countries to take responsibility for the resolution of their remaining differences, so that their summit concludes with a success.

The commitment, he said, will ?mark an end to the era of conflict and ushers in a new era of peace, cooperation and mutual development for the two countries and their people.?

The UN Secretary General also the AUHIP for its continued able leadership in facilitating and mediating the talks between the two parties, and thanked the special envoy for his support to that effort.
