We've survived the overblown hoopla that is the Olympic Games. The baseball season has been all but over for Cubs fan such as myself for months now, and while watching the White Sox try to cling to their narrow division lead is entertaining, I have no delusions that they'll still be there for me to root for (or root against, depending on my mood) veryfar into October.

Thankfully, oh so thankfully, it's almost time for America's true pastime to return. Nothing matches the excitement of the start of the NFLseason. The only thing which comes even close is the end of the NFLseason, the playoffs, which this year willbring with them a bittersweet sorrow as we slowly watch your Bears and my Chargers fall by the wayside, leaving only the Super Bowl and then a long, cold winter of rushed, post-lockout hockey and a Bulls team trying in vain to stay afloat without Derrick Rose.

So in the spirit of basking in the moment, I bring you this, possibly my favorite column I get to write each year, my NFLpreview. And so as not to bogart all the fun, I've invited you good readers to join in this time around through The Times Sports Facebook page.

The question:What are you most looking forward to this NFLseason?

I'll begin with my own answer. ICANNOTWAITto watch the New York Jets utterly implode. Already a hornets nest of dysfunction, unjustified arroganceand look-at-me, look-at-me personalities, the Jets invited Tim Tebow into camp to bring in even more second-guessing, controversy and bad quarterbacking.

This exact scenario will play out in the final seconds of a game at some pointthis season, and I want -- nay, Imust?see it when it happens:

It isn't asking too much of Marshall to be better than Marty Booker, Jake, but I am puzzled by the Bears' enthusiasm at reassembling an offense whose best season was8-8 and whichnever made the playoffs.

Pat DuMais wants to see the Jets and Cowboys implode (with you there!), the Bears stay healthy (I think they will, mostly)and "the return of flex scheduling late in the season for Sunday Night Football." Amen, brother. Amen. There is some real crap scheduled in those slots right now.

Donny DeBernardi wants to know: "if Michael Vick can stay healthy for 16 (games) ... or more?" Not the way he plays, but a healthy Vick for 10-12 games will be enough to win the NFCEast.

And finally, Angela Accomando says: "My husband says the refs always 'cheat' but never in favor of the Bears. I told him I'm going to invent a big foam remote control he can throw at theTV. Human and soil bacteria swap antibiotic-resistance genes

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? Soil bacteria and bacteria that cause human diseases have recently swapped at least seven antibiotic-resistance genes, researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis report Aug. 31 in Science.

According to the scientists, more studies are needed to determine how widespread this sharing is and to what extent it makes disease-causing pathogens harder to control.

"It is commonplace for antibiotics to make their way into the environment," says first author Kevin Forsberg, a graduate student. "Our results suggest that this may enhance drug resistance in soil bacteria in ways that could one day be shared with bacteria that cause human disease."

Among the questions still to be answered: Did the genes pass from soil bacteria to human pathogens or vice versa? And are the genes just the tip of a vast reservoir of shared resistance? Or did some combination of luck and a new technique for studying genes across entire bacterial communities lead the scientists to discover the shared resistance genes?

Humans only mix their genes when they produce offspring, but bacteria regularly exchange genes throughout their lifecycles. This ability is an important contributor to the rapid pace of bacterial evolution. When a bacterial strain develops a new way to beat antibiotics, it can share the strategy not only with its descendants but also with other bacteria.

Earlier studies by other scientists have identified numerous resistance genes in strains of soil bacteria. However, unlike the seven genes described in this report, the earlier genes were dissimilar to their analogs in disease-causing bacteria, implying that they had crossed between the bacterial communities a long time ago.

Most of the antibiotics used to fight illness today originated from the soil. Bacteria use the antibiotics, in part, as weapons to compete with each other for resources and survival. Scientists have long acknowledged that gives environmental bacteria an evolutionary incentive to find ways to beat antibiotics.

"We wanted to try to get a broader sense of how often and extensively antibiotic-resistance genes are shared between environmental bacteria and pathogens," says senior author Gautam Dantas, PhD, assistant professor of pathology and immunology.

The researchers isolated bacteria from soil samples taken at various U.S. locations. The bacteria's DNA was broken into small chunks and randomly inserted into a strain of Escherichia coli that is vulnerable to antibiotics. Scientists treated the altered E. coli with multiple antibiotics.

"We knew that any E. coli that continued to grow after these treatments had picked up a gene from the soil bacteria that was helping it fight the antibiotics," Forsberg says.

Scientists took the DNA from soil bacteria out of the surviving E. coli and prepared it for high-throughput sequencing. Dantas' laboratory has developed techniques that make it possible to simultaneously sequence and analyze thousands of chunks of DNA from many diverse microorganisms. The DNA can be selected for a single function, such as antibiotic resistance.

When the scientists compared antibiotic-resistance genes found in the soil bacteria to disease-causing bacteria, they were surprised to find some genes were identical not only in the sections of the genes that code for proteins but also in nearby non-coding sections that help regulate the genes' activities.

Since bacteria have such large population sizes and rapid reproduction times, their DNA normally accumulates mutations and other alterations much more quickly than the DNA of humans. The lack of changes in the resistance genes identified in the study suggests that the transfers of the genes must have occurred fairly recently, according to Dantas.

In some soil bacteria, the genes are present in clusters that make the bacteria resistant to multiple classes of antibiotics, including forms of penicillin, sulfonamide and tetracycline.

"I suspect the soil is not a teeming reservoir of resistance genes," Dantas says. "But if factory farms or medical clinics continue to release antibiotics into the environment, it may enrich that reservoir, potentially making resistance genes more accessible to infectious bacteria."

German business confidence down more than expected

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) ? German business optimism fell more than expected in August, according to the Ifo survey published Monday, another sign that Europe's largest economy faces trouble from the eurozone debt crisis.

The index fell to 102.3 points in August, down from a revised 103.2 in July. Market analysts had expected a smaller dip to 102.6 points.

Economists have been warning that the debt crisis in the 17-country eurozone could eventually catch up with Germany. The country's economy has over the past few years done better than the currency union as a whole, which is struggling with a crisis over too much government debt and recessions in several countries. Germany grew 0.3 percent in the second quarter and unemployment remains low.

But the debt crisis is having an increasing impact on Germany as orders fall from its eurozone trading partners and businesses and consumers hold off on spending and investment out of fear of the future.

The Ifo index is based on a survey of 7,000 German businesses which are asked about their views of current business conditions and their expectations for the next six months. While views of how things are now were only slightly more downbeat, expectations for the future darkened significantly across several sectors, including manufacturing and retailing.

"Enterprises are increasingly pessimistic about their business development," Ifo president Hans-Werner Sinn said in a statement. "The Germany economy is weakening further."

Troubles elsewhere are starting to make themselves felt. Italy and Spain, the No. 3 and No. 4 eurozone economies, are in recessions as they try to reduce budget deficits and struggle to refinance their debts in bond markets. Greece, Portugal and Ireland have been bailed out by loans from other eurozone countries.

So far, exports of cars and industrial machinery to growing economies in Asia and the United States have helped Germany grow, while low unemployment has buoyed consumer spending at home. But those advantages may not be enough for much longer against the undertow from the eurozone crisis.

"Exports and domestic consumption have shielded the German economy against the euro crisis virus up to now," ING analyst Carsten Brzeski wrote in a note to investors. "This immunity, however, has been crumbling away quickly over recent months. As a consequence, it looks as if the German economy will, at best, be treading water in the coming months."

He said the evidence points to a contraction of the economy in the third quarter of the year. "However, let's be clear, given the sound fundamentals of the economy, any contraction should hardly feel recessionary in Germany," he said.

Andreas Rees, chief German economist at UniCredit Research in Munich, said "psychological headwinds" were playing a role. Germany's job market is still strong, and some workers have won big raises, most notably a 4.3 percent raise won by the biggest industrial workers union, IG Metall. That should boost consumer demand in stores, yet retailers were more pessimistic in the survey.

"Fears about the eurozone crisis were obviously outweighing these positive factors," Rees said.

The bill to introduce income tax for farmers has already been agreed with the Finance Ministry, Minister Kalemba says. Kalemba replaced previous Farm Minister Marek Sawicki this summer after he had to stand down due to allegations of cronyism at the Agriculture Ministry.

10,000 Syrian refugees stuck at Turkish border

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) ? Some 10,000 Syrian refugees are waiting on the Syrian side of the border as Turkey rushes to build more camps to accommodate the influx and carries out more stringent security checks on the newcomers, Turkish officials said Monday.

The developments underscore the growing toll Syria's civil war is having on neighboring countries, several of which have seen a massive flow of Syrians trying to escape the conflict which activists estimate has killed more than 20,000 people since March of last year.

Turkey has so far taken in more than 80,000 Syrians, and all nine Turkish refugee camps along the border are full. Until recently, newcomers were being housed in schools, dormitories or sports centers near the border while Turkish authorities scamper to construct four new camps that will increase Turkey's capacity to 100,000 refugees.

The refugees still stuck on the Syrian side will be allowed in "within a day or two" when a new camp near the border becomes operational, a Turkish official said, adding that Turkey's Red Crescent organization was providing emergency aid to the refugees as they wait to cross into Turkey.

Another official said Turkey was also carrying out more stringent security checks on the refugees, adding to the delay in bringing them across the border. The tighter checks come amid Turkish fears that Kurdish rebels fighting for self-rule in southeast Turkey may be coming in through Syria. There are also concerns that foreign jihadists are moving in and out of Turkey to fight the Syrian regime.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because of government rules that bar civil servants from speaking to the media without prior authorization.

Turkey's foreign minister, Ahmet Davutoglu, has said the United Nations should establish refugee camps inside Syria and that his country would struggle to cope if the refugee numbers rise substantially.

"Turkey is carrying out its humanitarian duties toward the Syrian people with whom it has historic brotherly ties," Davutoglu said Monday. "On the other hand, the increasing numbers are becoming an encumbrance. The international community must help share this burden."

Also Monday, Turkish television NTV broadcast a video of Cuneyt Unal, a Turkish journalist who is reportedly being held in Syrian government captivity. Turkey's state-run news agency Anadolu said the video was first shown on a pro-regime television station in Syria.

Unal was working as a cameraman for the U.S.-funded al-Hurra network when he and a colleague, Bashar Fahmi, were believed to have been captured while covering fighting in the northern Syrian city of Aleppo a week ago. The cameraman, seen with bruises under his eyes, says he crossed into Syria with foreign militants and one image shows him holding a weapon.

Davutoglu said Monday the journalist was coerced into making a statement and that Syria was responsible for his well-being.

Syria wages new onslaughts on two main cities

Syrian forces launched a deadly assault in the southwestern belt of Damascus on Saturday, in what activists said was a new bid to crush "once and for all" the insurgency in the capital.

Combat helicopters and tanks also pounded rebel-held areas of the battered northern city of Aleppo, an AFP journalist and monitors said, as the army pressed on with its war against fighters seeking to topple President Bashar al-Assad.

The fresh violence erupted a day after new international envoy Lakhdar Brahimi admitted he was "scared" of the enormity of the task he faces to try to end the increasingly ferocious conflict, now in its 18th month.

Brahimi, who takes over from former UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan next month, held talks with UN leaders in New York on Friday, saying the Syrian people "will be our first masters."

Annan, a former UN chief, quit earlier this month after the failure of his six-point plan to try to bring peace, which was left in tatters by the relentless bloodshed and divisions among world powers over how to tackle the conflict.

In the latest in a string of such cases, dozens of bodies were found in the town of Daraya, southwest of Damascus, where troops have been waging a fierce assault against rebel holdouts, a monitoring group said on Saturday.

And at least 23 civilians, including two women and three children, were killed in gunfire and summary executions in Daraya, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, bring the death toll in the town to more than 120 this week alone.

"Security forces have launched a campaign of arrests, and residents are anxious and afraid that there will be another civilian massacre" in Daraya, said the Local Coordination Committees, a network of activists on the ground.

State television, for its part, said Daraya was being "purified of terrorist remnants."

The army claimed to have retaken most of Damascus in late July, after about two weeks of intense fighting across the capital's southern belt.

Most rebel Free Syrian Army fighters were forced out into the nearby countryside, but have since resumed hit-and-run operations, according to activists.

In Aleppo, an AFP correspondent reported heavy shelling by tanks in several neighbourhoods, sending civilians scrambling for safety as exploding shells sent up clouds of smoke and dust.

As rebel snipers faced off against the government's heavy armour, long breadlines formed in several neighbourhoods, including Qadi Askar where a fight broke out as people queued in the hot afternoon sun.

Rebels said earlier this week they controlled 60 percent of Aleppo but the regime has dismissed the claims and said Thursday the army had recaptured three Christian neighbourhoods, where residents are largely pro-Assad.

Opposition fighters said they were digging in for a war of attrition in Aleppo, the once thriving commercial hub where the regime had warned last month of "the mother of all battles."

"The situation? They are trying to advance in the area, we're holding them back, but there are a lot of wounded and martyrs," said one rebel commander in Saif al-Dawla neighbourhood.

Meanwhile, the body of a veteran Japanese war reporter killed this week during a gunfight in Aleppo was flown home on Saturday.

Mika Yamamoto, 45, was the fourth foreign journalist killed in Syria since March 2011 and the first to have died in Aleppo, which has borne the brunt of the conflict since fierce fighting erupted in the city last month.

An American, a Turk and a Jordanian journalist of Palestinian origin are still missing.

August is already the deadliest single month of the conflict with more than 4,000 people killed, according to the Observatory, which reported at least 118 people killed nationwide on Saturday.

It says more than 24,500 have been killed in the 17-month revolt, which began as a peaceful uprising against Assad's rule but has descended into a bloody civil war with no early resolution in sight.

The United Nations puts the death toll at more than 17,000 -- up sharply from the 9,000 it reported when Annan's ill-fated ceasefire was first introduced in April.

A troubled UN observer mission also wrapped up last week and the team's chief, Senegalese General Babacar Gaye, left Damascus on Saturday.

Damascus has said it is ready to work with Brahimi and voiced hope he could pave the way for "national dialogue," while also suggesting it was ready to discuss Assad's exit as part of any negotiated solution.

An Iranian delegation was in Damascus on Saturday for talks with Syrian officials, a day after Tehran -- the regime's staunchest ally -- said it would submit a plan for ending the conflict at a Non-Aligned Movement summit next week.

Tehran's initiative comes as its foes in the West seek to ramp up the pressure on Syria, with Washington and London threatening possible action if Damascus uses its chemical weapons and Paris voicing support for a partial no-fly zone.

International concerns are also mounting over the humanitarian crisis both in Syria and neighbouring countries after the United Nations said that the flow of refugees fleeing the fighting has jumped to at least 202,500.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? It's not just Todd Akin. The fallout from the Missouri Senate candidate's "legitimate rape" comment was the latest signal that the Republican path to the majority in the Senate may have just gotten tougher.

Democratic prospects have improved in states where Republicans had long been favored, like North Dakota and Arizona. And Republicans also now face the possibility of losing a seat in Maine.

The GOP argues that it still has a strong path to power, given improved prospects in states like Wisconsin, Nevada and Connecticut.

On Capitol Hill, Republicans are expected to keep control of the House and need to gain four seats claim the Senate majority? or three if Mitt Romney is elected, making Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan the tie-breaking vote.

Which party controls the Senate has vast influence over the future of major policies, such as President Barack Obama's health care law and the tax code, as well as the makeup of the Supreme Court. Four of nine current justices are over the age of 70.

If Republicans win control of the Senate and hang onto the House majority, a second-term Obama would find it difficult to pass any major legislation without great compromise. On the other hand, if Republican Mitt Romney wins and the GOP controls Congress, Romney could have an easy time pushing through his agenda to repeal Obama's health care overhaul and Wall Street regulations.

Multiple factors appeared to be working in Republicans' favor as this campaign cycle began. One-third of the Senate is up for grabs every other year, and this year, Democrats have 21 seats to defend, while Republicans have just 10. A still-sluggish economy, high unemployment and a Democratic president with an approval rating under 50 percent offered the GOP reasons for optimism.

But the Senate terrain now looks less dreary for Democrats.

The latest blow for Republicans came Sunday.

Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill, widely regarded as the most vulnerable Democrat up for re-election this year, watched her opponent, Rep. Akin, start to implode when he said in an interview that women's bodies can shut down pregnancies in cases of what he called "legitimate rape." Although Akin repeatedly apologized, top Republicans demanded he drop out and vowed to deprive him of funds should he stay in the race, as Akin has vowed to do.

That episode came six months after the surprise retirement announcement from Sen. Olympia Snowe, a popular Republican in left-leaning Maine. It created a major opening for Democrats, who were favored to pick up the seat until Angus King, the state's independent former governor, entered the race. Although King has refused to say which party he will caucus with if he wins the seat, both parties expect him to cast his lot with Democrats, making it a loss for Republicans.

In other states, the GOP shifts in fortune have been more subtle.

Democrats are playing defense in North Dakota, where Sen. Kent Conrad is retiring.

The state's other Senate seat and sole House seat both flipped from Democratic to Republican in 2010, and conservatives have been bullish about GOP Rep. Rick Berg's prospects for completing the clean sweep. But even Republicans acknowledge the race has become more competitive, with the GOP outside group Crossroads spending more than $700,000 on ads hitting Democrat Heidi Heitkamp, a huge amount in a state where advertising is relatively cheap.

Heitkamp, a former state attorney general, has eschewed her party's label by criticizing Obama whenever opportunities present ? on domestic energy, for instance, a hot issue in North Dakota. Berg has relentlessly pinned Heitkamp to Obama and his health care law, both of which are unpopular there and which Heitkamp praised before launching her campaign.

In Arizona, Republican Rep. Jeff Flake was expected to coast to a seat left open by the retiring Sen. Jon Kyl. But real estate mogul Wil Cardon has pummeled Flake on the airwaves, spending $6 million of his own money on mostly negative TV ads.

Flake still is the heavy favorite in Tuesday's primary. But if he wins, he'll enter the general election with just $1.7 million in the bank, slightly less than Democrat Richard Carmona. A former U.S. surgeon general and son of Puerto Rican immigrants, Carmona has Democrats enthused over his perceived appeal to independents and the state's growing Hispanic population.

"There's far too much extreme, vitriolic attacks," Carmona said on Friday, "and I think the public is tired of that."

Republicans have seen their prospects brighten elsewhere in recent months. And they say they're nimble enough to redirect their resources to achieve maximum effect.

"Missouri is clearly a setback if Congressman Akin chooses to remain in the race," said National Republican Senatorial Committee spokesman Brian Walsh. "On the flip side, Republicans still have a number of great opportunities to win back seats in other states across the country."

Wisconsin Republicans have their most viable general-election candidate in former Gov. Tommy Thompson, who edged out three conservatives with closer ties to the tea party in a hard-fought August primary. A CBS-New York Times poll released Thursday showed Thompson 6 points ahead of Rep. Tammy Baldwin, one of the House's most consistent liberals. And GOP enthusiasm may be higher in Wisconsin now that Romney has tapped Ryan, one of the state's congressmen, as his running mate.

To the west, Nevada Rep. Shelley Berkley, the state's Democratic Senate nominee, is under investigation by the House Ethics Committee. For Berkley, it's an inopportune time for the panel to be examining whether she used her position to benefit her family's financial interests. Berkley has said there was no conflict of interest.

Republicans are also eyeing opportunities in Connecticut, where former wrestling executive Linda McMahon is making a second go at a seat after losing in 2010, and in Florida and Virginia. Those two presidential battlegrounds have competitive Senate races likely to be overshadowed by the deluge of spending by Romney and Obama.

CAIRO (Reuters) - Opponents of Egypt's President Mohamed Mursi scuffled with his supporters on Friday during a demonstration that posed the first test of the Islamist leader's popularity on the street.

Egyptians had been nervous that an anti-Mursi protest, flagged for several weeks, could turn violent and in Cairo's Tahrir Square rival groups hurled stones at each other. Some wielded sticks and charged their opponents.

Activists behind the protest accuse Mursi of seeking to monopolize power after he wrested back powers in August that the military council, which had ruled Egypt for a year and a half, had sought to retain for itself.

But several liberal groups usually critical of the Muslim Brotherhood stayed away from the protest, including the April 6 youth movement that helped galvanize support to oust President Hosni Mubarak in 2011.

Those declining to demonstrate did so either because they felt it was too early to judge Mursi, two months into his presidency, or that any challenge should be by ballot box and not on the street.

"Wake up Egyptian people. Don't fall for the Brotherhood," said Mahmoud, in his 50s, addressing about 200 people in Tahrir Square. "Egypt is for all Egyptians, not only one group."

The violence flared when bangs went off nearby, but it was not clear if they was caused by a weapon, fireworks or something else, a Reuters witness said.

Some Tahrir demonstrators chanted: "What does the (Brotherhood's) guide want? He wants everyone to kiss his feet," a reference to the spiritual leader of the Islamist group.

The organizers, among them opposition politician Mohamed Abou Hamed, also want a probe into the funding of the Brotherhood, repressed by Mubarak during his 30-year rule but which has dominated the political scene since he was toppled.

In a headline before the protests, the daily Al Masry Al Youm called the demonstration "the first test for Mursi."

Protest organizers said they would march towards the presidential palace to protest against Mursi, sworn in on June 30 as Egypt's first president not drawn from military ranks.

"Both Tantawi and the Brotherhood stole the revolution and destroyed Egypt," said Mohsen Abed Rabuh, a government worker, referring to Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, Egypt's interim ruler, who was dismissed by Mursi this month.

He was speaking in Cairo's Abbasiya area, near the Defence Ministry, where dozens of protesters had gathered and more were congregating. It was the site of clashes between protesters and soldiers earlier this year when the army was still in charge.

The road leading to the ministry was cordoned off.

Security officials said they would protect peaceful protests but would act firmly against any lawbreakers after speculation in the press and social media that protesters could target Brotherhood premises.

CRITICISMS

The protest's Facebook page said it would be peaceful.

April 6 said in a statement before the protest that it disagreed with the Brotherhood on many issues but added: "Does all that and more push us to issue a judgment now to burn the group's members or premises and exile them from the country?"

Ahmed Said, head of the Free Egyptians, another liberal group staying away, wrote on Facebook: "Those who want to bring down the Brotherhood should bring them down via elections."

Mursi, propelled to the presidency by the well-organized Brotherhood, has formally resigned from the group saying he wanted to represent the whole nation in office.

Among criticisms of Mursi have been accusations that he has sought to muzzle the media. Critics point to a trial of two journalists, including the editor of the opposition newspaper Al-Dostour, for insulting the president.

Mursi went some way to deflecting criticism when he issued a law on Thursday, his first use of the legislative power that he wrested from the army, banning pre-trial detention of journalists. The Al-Dostour editor had been ordered detained just hours earlier.

Activists said more should be done.

"We welcome President Mursi's decision to ban pre-trial detention but urge thorough reform that repeals the archaic laws criminalizing the reporting of news and the expression of opinion," said Joel Simon, executive director of the Committee to Protect Journalists.

Some liberals have backed Mursi's early moves, including his August 12 decision to dismiss top generals, who were seen as obstructing civilian rule, and to cancel a decree that had given the army legislative power in the absence of the parliament.

The lower house, dominated by Mursi's Brotherhood, was dissolved by the military in June, based on a court order, shortly before the end of the presidential race.

One of the biggest tests Mursi faces is whether he can turn around the stricken economy. Anger at the gaping rich-poor divide was a major spark for the anti-Mubarak revolt.

This week, Egypt started talks for a $4.8 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund which could help rebuild confidence in a nation that was once a darling of frontier market investors.
