Morocco bars visit by Dutch abortion rights ship

RABAT/AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Morocco on Thursday barred Dutch abortion rights activists from docking their campaign ship to spread awareness about safe abortion methods in a Muslim country that bans the practice.

Women on Waves announced last week its intention to send their ship into the Moroccan port of Smir after visits to traditionally Roman Catholic countries Spain, Portugal and Ireland at the invitation of local women's groups.

The group says it wants to raise awareness about the use of pills for medical abortions and it would carry out terminations of pregnancies aboard its own ship in international waters.

Earlier on Thursday, Marlies Schellekens, a doctor from Women on Waves, said that Smir harbour was "totally blocked by warships so no one can get in", a day after Rabat said the activists would be barred from arriving by sea.

But Moroccan sources later said Women on Waves had actually sent only a yacht into Smir several days ago rather than their usual larger main campaign ship in the apparent expectation that Morocco would not let the group in anyway.

"The yacht has now left Smir to head back home. It was a publicity stunt," an official source said.

"The organisers took everyone for a ride ... The people (in the yacht) stayed aboard and did not complete immigration procedures that would have allowed them to enter Moroccan territory."

Women on Waves had been invited to Morocco by local rights group Alternative Movement for Individual Freedoms (MALI).

In Morocco, as in other Muslim states, abortion is illegal and punishable by up to 20 years in prison. But hundreds of illegal abortions are carried out daily in underground clinics or using herbal medicines, sometimes causing death or injury.

Each year hundreds of Moroccan single mothers are forced to abandon or give up their babies for adoption because of the stigma linked to abortion and pre-marital pregnancy.

On Wednesday Interior Minister Mohand Laenser, a secular member of the government led since December by moderate Islamists, said the Women on Waves would not be allowed into Morocco. "The organisers have never contacted us to seek permission to visit Morocco," Laenser told Reuters.

The Moroccan Association Against Clandestine Abortion said in June that legislation on abortion was out of step with social realities in the country and the number of unsafe abortions showed the need for a political commitment to legal reform.

Organisers of an all-gay cruise in June said Moroccan officials had cancelled what would have been the first visit of its kind to a Muslim country.

A complete solution for oil-spill cleanup

A complete solution for oil-spill cleanup [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 3-Oct-2012

Scientists are describing what may be a "complete solution" to cleaning up oil spills a superabsorbent material that sops up 40 times its own weight in oil and then can be shipped to an oil refinery and processed to recover the oil. Their article on the material appears in ACS' journal Energy & Fuels.

T. C. Mike Chung and Xuepei Yuan point out that current methods for coping with oil spills like the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster are low-tech, decades-old and have many disadvantages. Corncobs, straw and other absorbents, for instance, can hold only about 5 times their own weight and pick up water, as well as oil. Those materials then become industrial waste that must be disposed of in special landfills or burned.

Their solution is a polymer material that transforms an oil spill into a soft, solid oil-containing gel. One pound of the material can recover about 5 gallons of crude oil. The gel is strong enough to be collected and transported. Then, it can be converted to a liquid and refined like regular crude oil. That oil would be worth $15 when crude oil sells for $100 a barrel. "Overall, this cost-effective new polyolefin oil-SAP technology shall dramatically reduce the environmental impacts from oil spills and help recover one of our most precious natural resources," the authors said.

Baseball 2012: The game's best off-beat, under-the-radar statistics and trivia

Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Homer Bailey throws during the first inning of a baseball game against the St. Louis Cardinals, Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2012, in St. Louis. (Jeff Roberson/AP)

In May, Ryan Dempster of the Chicago Cubs and Homer Bailey of the Cincinnati Reds became the first starting pitchers in major-league history to oppose each other on their birthdays

Backstory: Frankly, it?s amazing that baseball?s statmeisters would know this is a first over the entire sweep of big-league history. Bailey, the younger player by nine years, was unaware of the coincidence until a Baseball Hall of Fame rep approached him in the trainer?s room afterward.

Bailey and Dempster were asked to sign several balls to record the event. It was not really a happy occasion for Dempster, who had pitched eight scoreless innings and left the game with a 3-0 lead, only to see the Reds come from behind to win in the 10th inning.?

Asia stocks up on mildly positive US data

BANGKOK (AP) ? A pair of positive U.S. economic reports helped prod Asian stock markets higher Thursday, but enthusiasm wilted in Europe ahead of a bond auction in Spain that will test investor appetite.

Cash-strapped Spain, which is struggling to prop up its shaky banking sector amid a deep recession, will auction bonds maturing in 2014, 2015 and 2017. Elsewhere in Europe, the Bank of England meets to set its interest rate and decide on any further expansion of its quantitative easing program.

European stocks fell in early trading. Britain's FTSE 100 was marginally lower at 5,821.77. Germany's DAX lost 0.3 percent to 7,296.97 and France's CAC-40 lost 0.4 percent to 3,393.93.

But Wall Street futures augured gains. Dow Jones industrial futures gained 0.2 percent to 13,456 and S&P 500 futures added 0.3 percent to 1,449.10.

Hints of improvement in the world's biggest economy helped propel Asian stocks higher earlier in the day. A report released Wednesday showed U.S. service companies grew last month at the fastest pace in six months. A separate report said American companies engaged in a modest amount of hiring in September.

Japan's Nikkei 225 rose 0.9 percent to close at 8,824.59. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.3 percent to 4,452.40. Benchmarks in India, the Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia also rose. South Korea's Kospi fell 0.2 percent to 1,992.68. New Zealand also closed lower.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 0.1 percent to 20,907.95, continuing to benefit from the Chinese Communist Party's long-overdue announcement on Friday that a party congress is scheduled for Nov. 8, when President Hu Jintao will step down as party boss and Vice President Xi Jinping will succeed him.

"It means political stability is enhanced in mainland China," said Linus Yip, strategist at First Shanghai Securities in Hong Kong.

Japanese export shares soared on the prospect of a healing economy in the U.S. ? a key market for Japanese goods including high-end vehicles. Toyota Motor Corp. jumped 3 percent and Nissan Motor Co. soared 5.1 percent.

But regional energy companies fell on slumping oil prices. Hong Kong-listed China National Offshore Oil Corp., known as CNOOC, dropped 1.6 percent.

Australian surf wear maker Billabong International Ltd., which is in takeover talks with a private equity firm, plummeted 18.3 percent amid speculation that the takeover bid may be withdrawn.

Some investors remained cautious due to events in Spain. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy denied this week that his government was about to ask for financial aid as it seeks to get a grip on its public finances.

Spain is under pressure to ask for financial assistance from the European Central Bank to keep a lid on its borrowing costs but the government has been reluctant to do so because it may come with conditions on its budget. Germany is also pushing Madrid to delay such a move because the government in Berlin is wary of presenting yet another rescue plan for a vote in parliament.

Spain's borrowing rates have come down since September when the ECB announced a new plan to buy government bonds of struggling euro countries. On Wednesday, the interest rate on the country's 10-year bond was flat around 5.75 percent.

Benchmark oil for November delivery was up 39 cents to $88.54 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell $3.75, or 4.1 percent, to $88.14 per barrel in New York on Wednesday. That was the biggest decline since May 4 when oil fell $4.05 per barrel.

In currencies, the euro rose to $1.2934 from $1.2899 late Wednesday in New York. The dollar was nearly unchanged at 78.53 yen from 78.52 yen.

British GENES (British Genealogy News and Events): Back To Our ...

With thanks to Paul Gorry for the following:

Just days to go to BACK TO OUR PAST 2012

The organisers of the Back To Our Past Show (www.backtoourpast.com)?are pleased to announce that Ancestry.com has become the event?s title sponsor. Ancestry.com recently moved its international operations to Dublin and its support for such an important feature within Irish genealogy is a welcome development.

BTOP 2012, an Irish heritage experience, takes place in the Industries Hall at the RDS, Dublin, on the weekend of 12-14 October 2012. This time it embraces the broader historical world, while genealogy remains at the core of the event. The programme of presentations to be given over the three days of BTOP may now be viewed on the event?s website www.backtoourpast.com The Friday morning starts appropriately with ?In the Beginning ? ? and Sunday afternoon finishes with ?Dead Money?. Sandwiched between are talks on diverse historical and genealogical topics given by highly regarded speakers.

There are two strands of presentations running concurrently. They are free to those attending BTOP and there is no booking facility, so the tip is to choose your favourite talks in advance and get to the relevant presentation area early. There?s a great choice. From care of documents and photographs to exploring your DNA, family historians have plenty to look forward to. In the run up to The Gathering in 2013, Helen Kelly talks about the deeply personal connection involved in ?retracing ancestral footprints?. If looking overseas for emigrant great-granduncles and their descendants is part of your research, Else Churchill?s presentation on the Irish in Victorian London may be on your list, while there are other talks on researching British, American and Canadian records. Back home, John Tierney talks about exploring graveyards on-line.

You can also learn about two new genealogical sources. One is TIARA?s Foresters Project, involving over 50,000 life insurance policies from the Massachusetts Catholic Order of Foresters. The Foresters were founded in 1879 by Irish immigrants, and the records provide valuable genealogical information, often linking back to Ireland.

The other new source is the Morpeth Testimonial Roll, a document containing the names and addresses of almost 300,000 Irishmen. The roll was presented to the departing Chief Secretary, Lord Morpeth, in 1841. Currently it is held in NUI Maynooth and it is being indexed as part of Ancestry.com?s World Archives Project.

As all genealogists know, historical context is vitally important. Lorna Elms of the National Museum ? Country Life ? introduces her audience to the on-line Irish Community Archive Network, which is bringing local history to the world. Also championing that cause is Larry Breen of the Federation of Local History Societies. Learning about the Irish Landmark Trust or post office history are other options. Then there are three authors telling you about the Cistercian Order in medieval Ireland, Martello towers in Dublin and some of the greatest villains of Irish history.

Don?t forget that Eric Knowles of BBC?s Antiques Roadshow will be offering his expert opinion on treasured heirlooms, while other familiar faces from television, Nicola Morris, John Grenham and Steven Smyrl will be offering advice on genealogy when they?re not speaking in the presentation areas. You may be planning to visit BTOP on one of the days, but when you study the line-up of speakers you may just be tempted to spend the whole weekend at the RDS.
