TOKYO ? Two-time champion Lee Chong Wei regained the men?s singles title by fending off the challenge from Boonsak Ponsana to win the Japan Open badminton tournament on Sunday.

The Malaysian top seed, the winner in Japan in 2007 and 2010, powered his way through to a 21-18, 21-18 victory over the Thai.

?It was really a good match, but it was tough,? said Lee, 29.

?This is my first tournament after the London Olympics. I?m very happy to start with this victory. I can put my disappointment behind me with this title,? said Lee, who lost to Lin Dan in the Olympic finals twice in a row.

Lee hit a smash to take the first game, and then neither could take a decisive lead in the second game to be tied at 5-5.

Lee jumped ahead 10-6 showing several disguised overhead drop shots combined with a smash and then took a commanding 20-15 lead.

Boonsak tenaciously saved three match points to trail 18-20, but his jump smash went wide after a long rally on the next point to surrender the 42-minute match.

Lee improved his record against Boonsak to 14 wins against two defeats.

Rep: Green Day's Armstrong getting treatment

(AP) ? Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong is headed to treatment for substance abuse.

Sunday's announcement by the band's rep comes after the 40-year-old frontman had a meltdown onstage at the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas on Friday. As Green Day was wrapping up its performance during the all-star, two-day concert, Armstrong profanely complained that the band's time was being cut short.

"One minute left, one minute (expletive) left. You're gonna give me (expletive) one minute? ... I'm not (expletive) Justin Bieber, you (expletives)!" he yelled (although Bieber was not part of the night's festivities).

Armstrong smashed his guitar before leaving the stage.

In a statement to The Associated Press, Green Day apologized "to those they offended at the iHeartRadio Festival" and said its set was not cut short by Clear Channel, the host of the two-day festival.

The Grammy winning band also is canceling some of its promotional appearances. It is due to release the album "Uno" on Tuesday, the follow-up to "21st Century Breakdown," released three years ago. "Uno" is the first in a trilogy of albums; the second is to be out in November, and the last in January. The band is due to kick off a nationwide tour Nov. 26 in Seattle.

Armstrong was hospitalized in early September in Bologna, Italy, for an undisclosed ailment, but recovered well enough to perform at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sept. 6. Since then, the band has made a series of performances, including a "Good Morning America" performance and a New York City concert for the launch of Nokia Music on Sept. 15. No interviews of the band were allowed that evening, but the band chatted with fans and Nokia and AT&T executives before performing for about two hours.

It's unclear what Armstrong is receiving treatment for; in 2003, he was arrested for DUI, and has acknowledged in the past taking various drugs but has said he now eschews them.

Green Day is one of rock's top acts and had huge success with its 2004 politically charged album "American Idiot," which went on to become a Broadway musical. Armstrong performed for a stretch in the musical.

Most recently, he was a mentor on the NBC talent competition "The Voice."

A veterans' memorial in the form of a "peace cross" in Bladensburg, Maryland has come under criticism by the American Humanist Association (AHA), which has said the memorial is a "religious symbol" on public land and that the government "should not be in the business of promoting religion," the Cybercast News Service website reports today (September 21, 2012).

"This cross amounts to an unconstitutional government endorsement of Christianity on public land. It is an exclusively Christian symbol that does not represent the sacrifice of non-Christian soldiers. Its prominent presence on public land leaves any observer with the notion that Christianity is exclusively favored and promoted by the government," said Bill Burgess, director of the AHA Legal Center.

AHA recently sent a letter to the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission. The letter cited the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment in its challenge that "the Constitution mandates that the government remain secular, rather than affiliate itself with religious beliefs or institutions."

But Hiram Sasser -- director of litigation for Liberty Institute -- responded to AHA's challenge. "Surely, the Humanists are bluffing. I doubt very seriously this group will even file a lawsuit to disturb the Bladensburg Peace Cross, which has stood for nearly a century as a symbol of the selfless sacrifice and service of the 49 soldiers who paid the ultimate price for the freedom of others during World War I," Sasser said.

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? An armed man with a military background took a hostage inside a downtown office building Friday and posted Facebook updates saying he had "lost everything" before his profile page was shut down.

Police Chief Nate Harper identified the hostage-taker as Klein Michael Thaxton, who wrote on Facebook that people will "never have to woryy (sic) about me again" after he took a man hostage inside the office of a benefits administration firm on the 16th floor of Three Gateway Center.

Thaxton's friends responded to his Facebook postings by urging him to end the situation peacefully, including one who asked him to think of his mother.

The page went offline around 1 p.m., about five hours after Thaxton allegedly entered a benefits administration company's office with a gun and asked to see the man he took hostage.

The Facebook exchanges had the potential to both help and harm the negotiations, Harper said. It's helpful that Thaxton can see "that people are concerned about his well-being," Harper said, but "it is a distraction for negotiating."

Harper noted that Thaxton remained calm and they want to keep him that way. He said Thaxton was cooperative, although he has made no demands.

Workers milled around near the building after they were ordered out shortly after 8 a.m. when employees in a nearby office called 911 to report an emergency at CW Breitsman Associates. It's not clear what led Thaxton to target the company.

Police brought the suspect's mother to the office building and put her in touch with Thaxton, Harper said. She left the building shortly after 1 p.m., telling reporters that she hoped her son would get the help he needed.

She didn't know what drove her son to take a hostage, according to Harper.

A worker on the 16th floor described a woman running into her office yelling for someone to call 911. Kathi Dvorak, an administrative assistant at AXA Advisors, said a second woman ran in and said her office was being robbed.

Harper said authorities know the name of the man taken hostage, but he did not release it. He had previously described the hostage-taker as having a military background but didn't elaborate.

Thaxton has a criminal record that includes a guilty plea to robbery earlier this year and a minimum six-month jail sentence.

Joel Kirchartz, a 28-year-old web developer who works on the 17th floor, said he and his co-workers looked out the windows Friday morning and "a bunch of cops pulled up with all sorts of sirens going; there must have been 20 of them." He said he went downstairs to find out what was happening and by the time he got outside, police had sealed the building.

Another worker, Sarah Vereb, said she was at her desk when she was ordered to leave the building shortly after a friend called to report that she wasn't being allowed up from the lobby.

Hundreds of workers walked down the stairwell. Vereb said the exodus was orderly and "very, very quiet."

A phone message left for the building's Santa Monica, Calif.-based ownership group was not immediately returned. The building complex management office confirmed the evacuation and said it was working with police.
