New biomarker may help in early detection of Alzheimer's disease ...

?These results suggest that SAPP as a biomarker may be useful and superior to a 1-42 established marker for early diagnosis of Alzheimer?s disease,? said Perneczky.A new biomarker may help identify people with mild memory impairment will develop Alzheimer?s disease, according to a new study published in the June 22, 2011, online issue of Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology. The biomarkers may be more accurate than the currently established biomarkers.

The study involved 58 people with mild memory problems or mild cognitive impairment . Up to 15 % of people with MCI develop Alzheimer?s each year.

The study was supported by the League of Friends of the Technical University of Monaco and the Commission for Clinical Research Hospital Rechts der Isar of Monaco of Bavaria.

Participants were followed for almost three years on average. At that time, 21 people had developed Alzheimer?s disease, 27 still had mild cognitive impairment and eight people were returned to their normal cognitive health. Two people had developed dementia, and their results were not included in the analysis.

?Being able to identify who will develop Alzheimer?s disease early in the process will be critical to the future,? said study author Robert Perneczky, MD, Technical University of Monaco of Bavaria, Germany. ?Once we have treatments that may prevent Alzheimer?s, we were able to start treatment early and hopefully avoid the loss of memory and thought that occurs with this devastating disease.?

Alarming trends of maternal and neonatal health in recent years are the driving force behind this legislation. Despite this high level of spending, our nation ranks far behind most developed countries in the main indicators of perinatal health. There is a growing shortage of health workers and maternity facilities in many parts of the country, particularly in rural areas and inner cities. There are significant racial and ethnic differences in the outcomes of maternity and the lack of diversity in maternity care orkforce, which created further obstacles to the ability of women to access maternity services culturally and linguistically competent.

The researchers found that people who have developed Alzheimer?s disease showed significantly higher levels of a soluble protein called beta amyloid precursor protein in their cerebrospinal fluid compared with those who did not develop Alzheimer?s disease.

Those who developed Alzheimer?s disease has an average of 1,200 nanograms per milliliter, compared to 932 for those who do not develop the disease.
